Chiller

I really want to have a species tank with Seahorses but apparently they require a chiller. Chillers are really expensive! Can anyone point me to a cheaper one? I have even looked for used ones and they are expensive.

BTW: Probably a 29g tank for now...

What kind of seahorses are you looking at? The tropical seahorses can be kept at 74-77 degrees easily enough. Depending on what you set your a/c in your house to, combined with some evaporative cooling, you may be able to pull it off without a chiller.

Most of what I want specify under 75. I read that even at 75 they could be in trouble. I don't see any way to keep this tank that cool without a chiller. My 40B I can't keep under 82!

Why cant you keep your 40 breeder under 82? how warm is your house during the day? My house is set to 82 during the day and with a fan over my sump the tank is fairly stable at 78 degrees. Do you have any type of active cooling, do you have a canopy or open top? As for the chiller, they are expensive plain and simple. Look at your local clubs and try and find one used is your best bet. Dont try and skimp and buy one two small for your system, as it will be running constantly and any money you saved up front you will soon pay and more to PG&E.

Ambient temp is 75 or so. Tank has HOB skimmer, 750gph powerhead, 400gph pump and 700gph pump and 4x39watt T5HO lights all adding heat. Screen top. Ceiling fan in room that is on. Well ventilated canopy (currently taken off). With room this temp, The tank is usually around 80. If the room temp goes up much from there, it is a degree for degree increase. The sea horses will go in the basement, but it is still 72ish. I know I am close, but I want to be successful for this and keeping these tanks cool has always been an issue.

You could on the used forums here if you had about 40 more posts. But they are in emand right now, so it'd be hard to find a steal on a used one.....
