Im thinking of going with a chiller on my 75 RR project.....do you think a 1/10 HP would be plenty.?......also considering used...local if possible.
TIA
Brian

BTW Im getting closer.....will be moving the tank upstairs tonight from the garage where its been while buying supplies.......:)

Thanks Rogger....you know me always jumping the gun.....Plus I have all the room in the world now in my stand and hood for fans.

Rogger always to the rescue....:)

I have 2x175w MH on and the temp stay at ~78* w/ a small fan. Hopefull, I don't need a chiller after the third light come on.

Oh, yeah Rogger also did told me about the fan on the tank, too! Thanks again Rogger!:)

DUDE! I just had to ship out my 40lb chiller to someone in Texas, lol, I sold it for 250$ and was taking offers locally, it was a 1/6hp, worked great for my 125g.

Lol!

If you put a fan on your sump, blowing on the water it will drop your temp in your tank. The trade off is that You will evaporate more water.

More evaporation comes handy when you use a kalk reactor, IMO a good investment in a tank, one of those best buck for your money!

The flip side is that the extra evaporation raises the indoor humidity and puts an extra load on your household AC....for large tanks this can be an issue, especially if your AC already has trouble keeping up with the hot temps.

The other benefit of having a chiller, even if it isn't used much, is that you can keep you tank cool when forced to run on generator power (knock on wood, no more hurricanes, please....).

FWIW, I run a 1/3hp chiller on my system of almost 300g total water volume. A tad bit undersized based on the conventional wisdom, but it does just fine. It probably helps that the chiller is plumbed outdoors so it can exhaust the heat easily.

"(HAD deep pockets THEN)"

That is a condition that keeping reef tanks quickly takes care of.. :)

BTW, what is the recommended size of chiller for a 325g water volume? (tank and sump).

Depends on how much heat you need it to remove...what kind of pulldown are you looking for? I get away with a 1/3hp Aqua Logic with nearly 300g of volume, but I'm only reducing the temp by a few degrees. Most would recommend a 1/2hp for 325g. It's also going to depend on what manufacturer you go with. Some cool more effectively than others, from what I've read/heard.
