Reefing On My Mind
Team RC
Just researching my next big purchase... Was wondering what type of Chiller everyone was running...

1. Brand
2. HP
3. Inline/ Drop In

I'm thinking about a 1/3 hp inline dual chiller... This is for my 120g dispay w/40g sump... LMK what you guys think...

TIA!!!!!!!! :D

1. Aqualogic
2. I think 1/3
3. In line all the way.

I think that the 1/3 would be great for your system...it wouldn't run that much either. I had the 1/3 on my 135 and it was great! I got it a bit oversized because I thought that I could use it on a bigger tank...and now mine is maybe slightly undersized. But that's fine...I might order another 1/3 so I have two, but I can't decide between that and a big single one, ya know?

So it's a big oversized but I think it's way better to be oversized than undersized.

I am running an Aqualogic 1/4 hp inline on my 120 and it works great. Doesn't hurt to oversize. If you look around you might be able to get a good deal. I think I got mine from thatfishplace with the single controller for around $650 on sale. This should be a good time of year to get one.

It's not nearly as bad as you'd think. I actually hardly notice it at all and I keep it at like 77 (+-1).

But to combat the chiller having to run a lot I change the cycle of my lights based on time of year. In the summer they run 7:30am to 3:30pm, and in the winter it's more like noon to 8pm or so.

So what's the deal with everyone using Aqua Logic???

Aqualogic's are generally considered to be the best/most reliable chillers:)

just need to clean them once every 2 years or so HEHE.

LOL I think thats too labor intensive for me... ;)

Thanks for the info/link...

IMO, all chillers should have the condensor cleaned annually and the evaporator coils every other year. Also, the freon pressure should be checked about once a year to avoid having the compressor work too hard. But I'm a big fan of PM (preventative maintenance).

yea... i just said that because of the issue I had with mine about 6 months back.... i thought it was low on freon, but turned out my coils were completely gunked up...

A little vinegar bath later all new again, but I agree with randy thats to much labor, so next time I'm going to just buy a new one. :)

BTW thought you guys were coming to our meeting today...

I couldn't make it... Leaving town shortly... :( To be honest I completely forgot...

I'll blame it on Mel not reminding me...

I definately want to make it down relatively soon... Especially since I haven't seen Patricks tanks yet... :)
