chillers

Does anyone know of a respected brand of chiller that makes one for a 75 gallon tank - not too expensive? Also, I would really like it if I could rig it without putting any holes in my sump. Thx.

Bob,

cali_reef is selling a Pacific Import CS-280 1/10hp chiller for $250. This would be the right size chiller for your tank. He's located in Mineola. You can also ask him of the different ways to plumb in a chiller.

Can I ask you why you think this is the proper horse power, without the specifics? Meaning, that I thought that when you are trying to size the chiller, you need to know the size of the tank (which you do) and then also know how many degrees you need to chill it down for.

For instance, I let my office go to extreme hot temperature, so I was recommended a 1/3 horsepower chiller for them. My temperature can go to 95 degrees. My fishtank size is 55 gallon, so I think, that would be different than this application.

Is there a benchmark, you are using. Can you tell me how to calculate it.

Thanks much,

Yes seldin,
You are correct in terms of sizing a chiller by guaging the size and pull down temp needed.
The pull down temp is the water temp. Unless your ambient room temp is 95 degrees 24/7, I doubt if your water temp would equal the above temp for the pull down calculation. But look here and it has some basic info on chillers and some customer experiences as you select individual chillers.

I installed the chiller at about 3:00 and the temp was 87:( Now at 9:00 (and having added about 1.5 gallons of frozen sw), the temp is 82:)

Nice!

Bob,
Which chiller did you get and 6 hrs to pull down 5 degrees?
I would keep an eye on it to make sure that the chiller does not need a refrigerant recharge or possible that not enough flow through the chiller.
Just some observations :)
My 1/4 hp chiller takes about 45 minutes to pull down 2.5 degrees on a 120g tank.

I got the PCI 280. Tony said it was fine for my set up and often used with corner 92s. It's the 1/10 hp, but I did not get the heavyduty pump. If it struggles to keep the temp down, mu guess would be either that (1) I could use a stronger pump or (2) the only place I could really fit the pump is where the return goes to the sump. Maybe a few air bubles are getting sucked in? If there are, I can not saee them in the return line:)

When did you get the 180? Must be beautiful? Btw, exactly how many angels do you have in it? THe more guys I meet, the more guys break the rules I keep reading about.

Here's a weird one for you: I lost one of my thre efglasherf wrasses so the dominant male pretty muchstopped flashing. I got a painted clown wrasse and now he flashes like crazy! I'm a hppy guy . ever see flasher wrasses? They are pretty cool.

Warren,

My penchane for stupidity sometimes amazes me! As I was waking up, I realized tha the ppump was not set for max outflow .............. I just switched it.

Hey Bob,
The 180 is a new addition to my move from LI to CT. During the transition and move, I lost all the fish and have since started all over again. All the corals were sold to a lira member since I didn't think that they would do well during the transition.
The 90g went to the office to replace an old acrylic 55g, the 120g I took up to CT and did a wall thingy with and the 102g rimless tank went with me also as a frag tank. Well at least that's what I tell myself :)

efglasherf wrasses :lol2:

I love flasher wrasses!

IN addition to setting the pump to maximum, I moved it out of the overflow path with bubbles. It is doing much beter now:) Thx for the heads up:)
