China strikes again...

God I hope that ship stays in one piece. I hope they find out what happens and if the captain and ship were at fault sue for 1 gazillion fa fillion shabadabado million yen!

They were between 9 and 15 miles out of the shipping lanes, depending on your source, in a highly protected part of the reef.

" Authorities are expected to spray chemical dispersant on the slick later Sunday if weather conditions are favourable.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said it was too early to say whether the spill would have a lasting impact on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef -- one of Australia's biggest tourist attractions.

"We don't have advice at present as to whether the oil is going to threaten any part of the ecology of the reef," Garrett told ABC Radio.

"That's why we want to use a dispersant quickly by trialing to assess its effectiveness. Once we've evaluated its effectiveness, then it might be available for further use.""

Why would they spray a dispersant? Wouldn't they want to go over it with an absorbent that they could easily remove, such as a giant absorbent blanket, or something that floats and is solid? I can't see dispersant being a good idea- anyone?

adding a chemical to a chemical....on the Barrier Reef....sounds redundant and potentially even more damaging.....they should just get someone at the steering of these beasts that can follow a map and stay on course....of course...hindsight is 20/20.

But, what is best method of cleanup- clearly they suck at steering, but we still need to clean it up- agreed, sounds like this dispersant is just a method of not making any one part of the reef super "sick"- but isn't there a method to just pull it out all together- like absorbent?

"(3) Use dispersants to break up the oil and speed its natural biodegradation... Dispersants are most effective when used within an hour or two of the initial spill. However, they are not appropriate for all oils and all locations. Successful dispersion of oil through the water column can affect marine organisms like deep-water corals and sea grass. It can also cause oil to be temporarily accumulated by subtidal seafood. Decisions on whether or not to use dispersants to combat an oil spill must be made in each individual case. The decision will take into account the time since the spill, the weather conditions, the particular environment involved, and the type of oil that has been spilt."

What's stated here would seem to be the exact reasons as to why you would NOT want to use dispersants in this situation...

EXACTLY. That's why i posted what i did earlier. Chemical warfare at it's finest. And we used dispersants on the B-2 project...nasty stuff...lots of people would get sick when we had to use it.

And i hear the owner of the shipping company..well China(they own everything in that country can be fined a whole few hundred thousand dollars..for leaving the shipping lane..

Now in this modern day of GPS How the heck can a ship leave a shipping lane and run aground on some of the most protected waters in the worlds?

This stinks of ..I'm China,I don't give a rats-a$$ what the world thinks of anything we do to pollute this planet..Go blame the USA,we don't care..
