they run very cool, and they have two fans blowing out from the top, i have grabbed these units after running for several house and they are never more than warm to the touch.

That's nice, but doesn't really answer the question - the temp of the housing is not the issue, it's the temp of the bulbs that kills.

This is also a concern I have with these units, although I'm seriously considering them (especially the ones with 3w parts driven at 2w).

received and installed.

they are very bright and give a nice shimmer like MH lamps...

Let me start by saying I know NOTHING about lighting. I am starting to do some research to update my lights in a 120g, 6' long tank. I currently have 2 pathetic T5's. It is mostly a tank for my tangs with some softies and low light corals. I currently do not have a canopy (although we may attempt to build one in the future). I am torn between T5/MH combo vs. LED. I would prefer LED simply because I wouldn't have to replace the bulbs + trying to avoid the added heat. My budget it $500-$600. Do you think that 3 of the LED's that you put on your tank would be enough for a 6' tank? I really am not interested in keeping corals that need high light. Moderate should be sufficient for me. Thanks for any input you have.

Shells, I would say 3 would be plenty. Especially if you are only keeping softies and fish in your tank 3 of those would work perfect, not put heat in your tank, and keep the electric bill down. I'd go LED. My .02

BigAirHarper, Thanks for the imput. The LEDs are what I am leaning toward. I do want the option of some corals that require moderate light. I do have some zoas and frogspawn that I currently keep in the upper half of the tank that are doing well under my current sad lights. I may just have to keep in mind that some of the corals need to placed higher in the tank with just 3 of these fixtures. Can these be mounted under a canopy someday if I go that route?

Also does anyone have some recommended for LED moonlights that I could add easily/moderately inexpensive?

The only issue with mounting these LEDs in a canopy is that the vent out the top. Just take that into consideration when mounting them.

I didnt had MH before , i do have LEDs and if i compaire them with my friends MH
I notice a calmer shimmer (more natural) then with my leds.
MH is single spot lighting and leds multiple spot lighting , i think its because of that.
This is the only critic i have on leds.

greetingzz tntneon :)

Well i received my LEDS last night, spent a little time modifying my canopy to install them, i mounted them on top of the canopy so airflow would not be an issue they are aprox, 10" above the water , i must say 3 of these over a 7 foot tank looks really good, no spotlight effect and no dark spots , the tank seems brighter (compared to my t5s) and the corals pop with colors with the actinics on. i will take some pics and post them when i get home today. Thanks to everyone who answered my questions.

What are your tank dimensions? Do you have any pics?

Link to fixture you bought? There has been a few different ones talked about?
Thanks
Corey

For those who have used these LEDs. How long did it take for the corals to adjust to the new lighting? And what is your lighting schedule.

I am looking for a Chinese LED light for my 28g JBJ NanoCube. Does anyone know of any websites that sell dimmable Chinese LEDs for under $500?

Thank you....
