I just installed two D120s from Evergrow just like they are (Royal Blue and White only). I do notice that my trumpet corals don't pop colorwise any more. Everything was under 6 T5s before. I'm just wondering if not having special ordered more colors if I'm missing a bunch of the spectrum that will effect my corals? I think next time I'll get some violets and a few UVs thrown in as well. Thoughts?

Try adding this 420nm violet strip alongside the lights. Its cheap, and will provide that extra bit of florescence to match the T5 look. The seller has different sizes too.

Have you used them before?

And like the other poster asked are these adding enough light in that spectrum to benefit the corals or just for looks?

My corals all seem to be happy under these lights (OK actually I nuked some softies not acclimating them and a few SPS had some minor bleaching, but the SPS are recovering and I've definitely seen a lot of growth since I switched), but I want to make sure they are getting all they need light-wise for the long run. Plus I miss that UV "pop" I got from my actinics, but that's more for my benefit.

I've read from page 80 to this and i think that this is a wonderfull thread!

I've a cube 18"x18"x18" i would ask to you what kind of led fixture best fit for it.

Basically i like the squared shape of the Nova A4 but i read that 120w on my tank maybe burn out everythings.

So, for a new led fixture to buy in september it seems there are thre options:

1) wait and see the new Evergrow model with auto dimming
2) buy a nova A4 with free shipping to italy
3) buy one of these

Expert, no. Willing to try as many things possible to get the best looking, best coral growing fixture for the price... yes. It's nice to not have to pay a fortune for good quality in this hobby for once.


Thanks for being the guinea pig. That's what our hobby has always been about. Planning on pulling the trigger on 2 of the new setup as soon as its ready. Since I have a bunch of Crees left over from my test build I'm thinking about using them on their own dimmer as spotlights on certain corals. Lots of interesting possibilities going on in this thread. :-)
 
bhazard451 (or anyone really)- Got a couple questions. I have an A4 with 20 blue 4 violet on dimmer one and 16 10-14k white, 4 blue and 4 UV on dimmer two. I want to add some 3500k bulbs and possibly some 420nm. What wavelength are the UV and the Violets? I was thinking about swapping 8 of the 10-14k white with 8 3500k white and maybe swappin the UV or the violets with the 420nm. Im just not sure if the UV are actually doing anything. I would love your suggestions. The way it is now is just slightly too blue with both on full power. What do you think?

Greensun is a good company too, like Evergrow. I like that new auto dimming light they have, but the placement of the lcd screen would bother me, being on top of the unit. Otherwise, they are a good company too, and make good fixtures.

Keep 8 10-14k, and add 8 3500k or even 6500k like you said. Swap the 400nm uv with 420nm violets, and you'll see the violet actinic light a little more. They will still be somewhat dim, but it matches closer to what a T5 420nm fiji actinic would look like.

Thanks. What is the wavelength of the violets from evergrow? And what is the wavelength of the UV?
 
I got some of the shenzen lights, But mine does not have a dimmer. what drivers would I need to get to replace the ones I have on the led fixture?

Here are the specs for the drivers I have now 18 3w bridgelux leds:
9 white(cool white + neutral white ):
output volt=30-42.5v, 0.68MA, in series connection
9 blue+violet:
output volt=24-29v, 0.68MA, in series connection

Are those the drivers that it came with? You might be able to use two Meanwell ELN-30-48D drivers.

Yes those drivers came with the light. I will check into the meanwells drivers. I also emailed rapidled and they recommend one of the drivers they sell and it comes with the dimming controller. I might get those as they are only $34 each.

Just a heads up Evergrow now has 4100-5000k whites :)
 
That's what this would be for. It will add back that actinic pop you desire.

I red through the tread on these "stunner" light. 36" with a total of 15 watts? They claim it can be cut at 3" incriiments so I'm suspecting it is on a constant voltage driver and there are at least 40 LED's. Now 40 LED's totaling 15 Watts means they are running at 375 mw each. This sounds like a nice moon light strip to me. With the T-5's on I seriously doubt you will see any difference if the LED's are on or off.

I have a 24 LED home built strip that runs at 24 Watts total on my 120 gallon. It is bright for a moon light but is unnoticable against 2 HO T-5 bulbs.
 
Good to know. Would love to ask for spectral plots of all the whites to see what they are truly outputting. I could see running all 4100-5000k whites depending on if it hits peaks of red and green better.

I have looked at numerious plots put out by many LED maufacturers. From the ones I have seen they all have big valleys in the 500 nm range. This is why some people suplement with a cyan 495nm t0 505nm LED. Unfortunatly the closest CREE makes is a green at 520nm to 535nm.

I will also state that I can berely believe some of the color temerature rating they put on LED's. It is almost like the Phenex 14,000K bulb being more blue than some other brands 20,000K bulb. However having worked in the lighting industray I will say that the ratings are probably in the legal limits for these bulbs.
