has anyone had this fish as a juvenile? i've had mine for a week and was bright yellow. now I see dark patches on him almost like chicken pox . iI have never seen this on any fish befor. From a distance I can see him getting darker on it's fins and edge of it's body. Is this normal for a color change?

Dark patches like chicken pox is not normal, the darker on it's fins and edge of body I would think would be normal.

Got a picture?

Dark patches sound like a stress reaction, like night camo coloration. A lot of tangs will get blotchy colors when they are stressed. Have you witnessed any aggression? I keep a pyroferus, one of the three species sold as mimic tangs and the one usually known as the chocolate tang. When I got him at around 2" he was solid yellow juvie, a Herald's angel mimic, and as he got larger he darkened around the head and especially the anal and dorsal fins and developed the dark and orange markings around the gills the adult is known for. Mine has darkened quite gradually over a period of years and continues to do so, your description does not sound like a normal color change, expecially since it came on so fast. How big is your fish and the tank he is in, any tankmates?

Sorry I've been trying to get a pic but he doesn't stay out in the open long. There aren't as many spots on him today but there are still acouple. I haven't noticed him being harassed buy any of the fish already in my tank. The tank is a 200 gal so there is plenty of room. I have a timony tang(sure that's spelled wrong lol) , blue spoted rabbit fish, melanius wrass, neon dottyback, blue devil damsel, basslet, and a manderen. So over all pretty peacefull tank. The mimic is much bigger then the other tang. I want to say that mimic is about 4.5".
