how do u go about choosing an ro/di unit. whats wrong w/ the ebay units? whats a good unit for under 150?

i found one on ebay for 100 shipped, the lowest i can find on the filter guys site is 130 nt including shipping.

The 100GPD membrane is not a good idea, it does not put out much more water then the 75 GPD unit and it DOES cuase the DI resin to be consumed faster (due to it's lower rejection rate).
Furthermore many of hte eBay units use much cheaper components, filters and DI resin.
Do yourself a favor and do some research before you spend your hard earned money

The initial purchase price is only PART of the equation. Not all RO/DI units are created the same or perform the same. The real cost is in the lifetime of use.
You may want to start by purchasing a TDS meter and letting us know what your tap water TDS is.
For a low price, I got the air water and ice mighty mite. I think it was about $100, included a tds meter and whatever type of adaptor you wanted (I'm in an apartment, so I use the faucet adaptor), and it's always measured 0 tds. I don't know yet how long the filters/resins will last, but I'm definitely happy with it. Took a while to fill up my 40 breeder though.

Do not be tempted by low initial prices, there is always a catch somewhere. Its usually poor quality components including membranes and carbon and poor quality low capacity DI filters. It either will not last long or it will never give you high quality reef grade water.
Expect to pay about $150 for a good quality "starter" RO/DI system that will function as advertised and have a decent life expectancy. For $200 you get a little better system that will have things you will eventually end up buying anyway like a pressure gauge and TDS meter and usually an autoshutoff valve to automate the system. For $350 retail (you can get a better price by participating in group buys) you can get the highest quality most state of the art system available today.

The biggest problem with the Mighty Mite is it does not use standard replacement filters so you pay a premium for replacements every time they need replacing. The DI is also a very small low capacity throw away cartridge that probably only holds 9 to 12 oz of resin instead of 24 oz like a vertical unit does. You will soon have more money invested with it than with a $139 standard sized configuration.

They do make good systems, but they did push too far here several months back and are now part of the bad words filter.
