Christmas Party

Mel, Thanks for offering. I think we should have enough utensils, plates, etc, especially if it is a relatively small group (although if we end up with a lot of people, it might be helpful...maybe bring it along just-in-case?!)

Sounds great Don :D Randy, I guess you could bring those Oreos if you still got 'em ;)

Look forward to seeing you at the meeting Scott, you can just bring yourself, but if you'd like to bring something food-wise, any side/snack food would be great.

Sorry been a crazy week at work. I'll be there for sure. On the website it says start time is 4pm.. is that right? (making sure, so I dont show up at matts and drive him nuts for 2 hrs haha ) oh uhm What kind of soda should I grab? I'll grab a case on my way down.

I shall try to make it. Are children invited as well? I'll bring some Mexican cornbread, since that is our traditional dish with chili.

Dave

I believe the website says 2pm, but come whenever you can :)
Any soda will be fine; I don't have much around (had to buy and pour off-brand cola down the drain just to get the 2l bottles for my brine hatchers!)

Children are welcome Dave, hope you can make it!

hmm ok.. I'll just grab a case of coke and a case of sprite. might be overkill with the soda.. but there will be 'some' options at least lol

I just did get an email to a 2-year-old list off. And it bounced back. Sorry about that. I followed up with a list from the website and several of those bounced, but at least the message seems to have gone through. Probably too little too late to make a difference.

About to head out that way. I'll see ya'll shortly.

lost my job at WNOX and just started a new job today with an other radio station, so needless to say I wont be there today. I hadn't checked the forum in such a long time. Have a good one guys.
Andy

Thanks for hosting Matt. I cant wait to see Mel's pics of the fireworks shots - Brent and Randy doing the two handed shots especially;)

Just wanted to thank Matt and his family for hosting the party. It was very interesting to see a different aspect to the hobby. BTW where did the gar come from? I wanted to look at him some more but got distracted (I wonder why?).

Yeah!!!!!! Mel, you need to get that pic up on here or Myspace... :D

In all seriousness though, thanks to Matt and Mrs. Carberry for sharing their home with us... What a spectacular view!!!!!! I have a new goal for my retirement... lol ;)

Thanks for coming everyone! I only wish we had more fireworks, but there were some pretty good ones :)

Mike, every spring when the gar spawn (in the lake), there are lots of tiny "larval" gar swimming near the shore. I think when I see them they have just released and started looking for food. I've always wanted to raise one up because one almost never sees the adults in the lake. Last spring I cought one with my hands and put it in that tub with a "colony" of feeder guppies. It seemed to double in size every week or two until it got colder. It was interesting to watch him hunt and grow in there, but now I'm left with a fish that could grow huge (I believe he is a longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus). I don't think I should put it back in the lake for fear of introducing any pathogens or non-native things from my tubs into the lake, so I think I will remove the Koi from one of the ponds (down by the gazeebo) next spring and put him in there.

That thing was from your lake!!!!!! Well then... Didn't know they were native down here... I bet there are some beasts laying at the bottom... Thats proof positive about Brent and my distrust of lakes... ;)

Here's the Ornament that was stolen before you guys had the chance...

Yup, sure was! But I've never been bitten by one :) It does make you wonder what's lurking down there though; every once in a while someone catches a huge catfish in there or something; one of the largest caught in the lake was caught within sight of the house! Diving in the lake is kind of creepy though, it's dark and cold.

I've only seen adult gars in the lake once, but they were easily 2.5-3' long. Kayaking on the lower Holston (that comes out of our lake and joins the French Broad to form the Tennessee that flows through Knoxville) I see them all the time, just not in the lake itself.

I've seen them in Norris many times, Loudon several times. You don't hear of them being caught because it's a special technic (kingfish rig with a stinger treble hook or a small hook and live bait and let the gar swim with the bait 30 mins before setting the hook - no bass fisherman could gather that much patience to set the hook, nor would they want to gut hook a bass). I used to catch them in S.FL. I've heard you can cook them in a smoker, but they are stinky and oily fish. I never tried it. We considered them a nuisance fish because they eat baby fish of any type with an unending appetite.

Randy, that is totally unfair! I had the last steal and you took it on the first steal.

Come to think of it, I've seen them on the Clinch as well... Perhaps I just didn't realize what they were... Hard to think of them as a nuisance though... I'm sure they fight like the dickens, and I wouldn't mind reeling one in...

Don~ We still need to get out together... I haven't been back out on the Clinch since I took Ashley for her birthday back in August... :( I need to get my priorities straightened out I suppose...

Randy...let me reiterate how badly you suck as* for keeping that ornament. I guess it would have gone home with someone else anyways since my freaking number was 4, but still!! hah hah. See if Ashley can get another one and we can maybe give it away as a door prize.

Here's the two best pictures:
