IIRC they live in a substrate made up of porites. The porites are very hard to keep alive and usually die off within a year, then the worms themselves go too. The life expectancy for these worms is one or two years in the aquarium. A few people may have gone beyond that time, but very few.
I got a poor xmas tree rock from another reefer where the porites were already all gone. The worms have been doing just fine, and even multiplying.
I got a worm rock from AZSB once where the worm tube had been totally cut in half. That worm is doing well too. I will let you know in a year or two how they fare. I think they are the coolest things.
Hmm... I don't understand why you think they are so hard to keep alive. Feed Phytoplankton, low to med flow, and low to med light. They should do fine.
I have seen prorites come in on LR and thrive in various tanks, also they seem to stay alive for months at AA, which can't be ideal conditions. I find it hard to believe they are difficult to keep.
