Do schools of green chromis "Chromis viridis" of say 6 kill each other untill there are only two left?

have you heard of this?

how hardy is a school of green chromis?

That is exactly what mine have done on two different occasions. Cannibalism wasn't the issue as the bodies were never eaten, at least not by the other chromis. I think that in the absence of predators chromis will turn on each other until they form a pair. Once mine paired up they formed a long term bond and it takes a while to whittle down the school to two fish. These fish are very hardy otherwise, especially in terms of disease resistance, but they dont hold up to abuse well at all. HTH

Despite what so many otherwise good references say, Chromis sp. are NOT schooling fish. They will tolerate each other when young, but as they mature they become territorial like any other damselfish.

One by one, the less-dominant individuals are killed off by the dominant pair until you're left with two. In smaller aquariums, the weaker of the pair is frequently killed as well. In very large aquaria, you'll end up with several pair, each defending a territory of roughly a square metre in footprint.

It happens faster in the larger species, like the Atlantic blue chromis (C. cyanea), but eventually, all chromis species will become rather a territorial fish.

yes they will kill each other off, they have a pecking order that is pretty aggressive and it is why they are best kept in schools of 10 or more to diffuse aggression among themselves.

I had ten of them for about 2 years, then all of a sudden they started disappearing 1 by 1. They were fine when smaller, but the bigger they got the more they beat up on each other.

I own 8 blue/green chromis in a 72 gallon reef for about 3 months, they still school together and sleep in the rock during the night.

We'll see if this theory is right, I'll keep an eye on them in the next 9 months for any sudden deaths among chasing and fighting.

Same here, I am also very puzzled

not sure but I think chromis follow a harem type of group. If there are excess males, the dominant male(s) will kill off the others.
