Chromis school

Got 12 in a 90 Gallon Tank some Agression at Feeding Time HMMM Imagine That.Really a Good choice in Fish very Beautiful in a School with each other.

I placed 3 in my 55G all at the same time, and as the first fish placed in the tank, now I am down to 1, I think the clowns may have forced them out the top though, I do see them chasing around sometimes, and not in a playful way. I was looking for the same thing, to have a small school of them swim together, and in the beginning two of them would always be together and the other would always hide in the back on its own. Don't mean to confuse your decision even more but I would say go for it and see what happens, I think it just all depends on each individual fish

I had 3 in a 30 gallon and the smallest was attacked, picked up a 4th which is the smalllest now and no one gets attacked

Check out "Coral Magazine" on Damsel Fish. There is an article there on Chromis picking the weakest off. It seems that this behaviour is due to too little food being made available. Feed the Chromis regularly, mixtures of foods, small stuff and the aggression should be minimized.
HTH

Update.
Lost one last week. Found it in the overflow. Don't if it was dead first or if the overflow killed it

I have 5 in my 55gal, along with a Powder Blue, Cinnamon clown and a Niger trigger. I've had the same 5 for almost 1yr now. They get along fine with their other tank mates. I thought for sure the smallest one, about 1/2", would get bullied by the rest, but it doesn't.

Contrary to most fish, I would advise getting the chromis large. With most, you would get them small so that they would establish a pecking order--this is good in most cases. For chromis, that's bad, because they'll be together all the time while shoaling. There's always one "weak" one ready to be killed at any time. With others, the pecking order is established early and young so that the "weak" ones know who to avoid (unavoidable in the case of shoaling as the idea is to stay with the pack).

I've had 19 in my 240 for sometime now. I have had variuos schools of these over the years and would say the key is that they are all from the same "batch". Whatever this means. Mainly that they are all the same size.

I HAVE 21 IN MY TANK AND THEY HAVE NO AGRESSION WHATSOEVER. KEEP THEM WELL FED AND THEY WILL BE FINE. MINE ARE AWESOME AS THEY SWIM IN A SCHOOL ALL THE TIME. THE ONLY TIME THEY SEPAARATE IS WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT AND THEY ALL SLEEP IN DIFFERENT PLACES. I STARTED WITH 30 OF THEM 1.5 TEARS AGO. NOW IM DOWN TO 21 BUT HAVENT HAD A CASUALTY FOR ABOUT 8 MONTHS. I SAY GO FOR IT SINCE THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE ANYWAYS. I JUST SAY IF YOU WANT 3 , BUY 6. IF YOU WANT 5 BUY 8. AND SO ON. WE WILL DEFINITELY LOSE SOME BUT ITS WELL WORTH IT WHEN ITS ALL OVER THEY LOOK GREAT.....

I have 3 of them in my 50gal. They are not in the tank for so long but my wrasse keeps forcing them to stay in group so they have no time to fight with each other.

I'm sorry, but this is awful advice.... "If you want 3, buy 6..."

Would you do that with any other pet :(

This sums up so many people's attitudes to Chromis... They're cheap so who cares if a few die...

I used to have a school of 19 chromis in my old 65 gallon. All in I probably added about 35 to end up with 19. Buying more than you intend to keep as a school is a must if you go the cheapo chromis route. The little guys are cheap fish (often juiced) and as such are collected, transported and housed like a cheap fish - stress related mortality after purchase is inevitable. I have never seen intra-chromis aggresion to that point of causing death.

If you pay up for the larger and better collected Fiji/Tahiti chromis just get your final number - these ones do much better.

Sorry man but this is just the reality. you need to expect that some are going to die because thats exactly what will happen...
i would love to say that if you buy 5 all five are going to survive but everyone whos been doing this for long enough knows that, thats just not going to happen. (so my advice still goes) if you fail to anticipate some mortality you will be left with a less number than you originally wanted, and adding a second batch will only increase the mortality rate on the second batch since the first batch will have already established hiarchy... well thats my advice...good luck...

No, the reality is you should give up on Chromis as a suitable species for the home aquarium. Just because a fish is cheap, it doesn't mean its okay for them to die.
