20+ years reef keeping. I have ALWAYS smoked in the house and in every room a fish tank is in. I have never had a problem keeping even the challenging species in ANY of my mixed SPS tanks.
Many times there are 5 or more smoking in the same room and I have a small house. I run big skimmers on all of my tanks. The only thing I have ever noticed is a small decrease in skimmer eff. while I am smoking in the room.
I have never seen any difference in growth/color/# of problems between my tanks and people in my reef club that do not smoke.
All my fish a legit prop 215 recommendation holders. on a real note though i believe the residue from cig's are from the stagnate smoke settling on these items. maybe just turn a fan on to blow the smoke away from the tank itself; or draw your skimmers air from outside or another room.
Happy Reefing Danzig, props on the name by the way.
It's an unsettled question, but I think it boils down to people who have a problem with smoking or the idea of smoking will convince themselves it is sure death and those of us who indulge backy or wacky will convince ourselves no problemo.
Smoked both heavily for years around all of my tanks from freshwater to reef and noticed no ill effect. When I quit almost 7 years ago, the tanks didn't suddenly spring to life or become easier to manage. I would imagine carbon would take out most pollutants.
That said, I do not allow smoking in my house nor would I want it around my tank. Obviously there would be special exceptions , but while it may not hurt the tank, it definitely can't help.
