Clam and Hermits

I have had a small maxima for about 3 months and everything has been fine. This morning, the clam is MIA - no signs of it including its shell.

I have a feeling the hermit crabs got it. I have couple big ones. But where the heck is the shell.

How many people keep hermits in the same tank with a clam?

I had 8-10 blue legs in my 10g with a ~2" maxima for almost a year without any problems.

maybe it got blown somewhere, but I doubt the hermits are the culprits

I found the clam shell in its closed position this morning. It was in the area my Emerald Crab resides. I think it might have grabed it. What odd is that the clam was on the oppisite side of the tank. He might have been the cause of my previous clam dying.

but i don't think the crab would eat the clam unless the clam was already dying, would it? or are emeralds that vicious?

I'm not sure if the emerald is that aggressive, but this makes two clams that appeared to be healthy disappearing over night.
