Clam detached itself from rocks and now

I have had a nice clam I picked up from Cloakerpoaked earlier this year when he had tank issues. It was doing well and had been attached to a rock. The rock has not moved nor anything around it but a week or so ago, I found the clam detached and lieing in the sand

I have tried to place it back on the rock, as well as some other rocks (including one piece of rubble very close to the bottom of the tank)- and it stays for a day or so then back in the sand

This is the only clam I have kept - can I keep it in the sand? i thought they liked to mount themseves on rocks? What causes them to detach themselves? Could something be knocking it off?

It seems quite healthy and always opens up once I place it somewhere
Thanks

I kept clams in the sand bed on a sliver of PVC to keep it straight and unattached to the bottom of the tank. I've heard of clams, especially on a shallow sandbed attaching themselves to the bottom glass, and you can harm them if you ever move the tank. Its unlikely that something is knocking it off...maybe the area is in too high a flow area or something to make it want to move...once they attach to a spot, they usually don't move, kinda like an anenome.
