Clam Eating Snail Exposed

Hi all,

Just found a snail munching on my deresa. We've had the clam for a little over a week. It had a small tear in the mantle after a couple days. I figured it would heal on it's own. Then a couple days ago my friend and I saw something inside it, but the gap was too small to see what it was. Today, one quarter of the mantle is gone, and I see that what I saw the other day was a snail syphon. I let the clam bite down on my thumb while I removed the snail with a pair of pliars and gave it a nice fresh water bath. ;) I don't know if the clam will make it, but it still opens up so I'll give it some DT's and let it try to heal itself.

Here's a pic of the evil snail. A penny is beside it for comparison

Yes, the evil snail appears to be a Cymatium sps, very possibly a young C. muricinum. They will prey upon bivalves and giant clams are certainly no exception.

Hope your clam makes it!

Cheers,
Bob
