They do not use enough nutrients to work as a filter. At least not an efficient one. I don't know if anyone has tried it. It would be an interesting experiment to put a healthy clam in say 5gal of water with a set amout of nitrate and phosphate and see how long it took to remove it. This would give you some idea of how much of an effect you would get from a clam filter I did this with chaetomorpha with great results

a buddy of mine has a clam out side in a 10 gallon tank that he uses miami tap water to top off with literally no filtration and the clam looks amazing.
I had a bit of cyano in my tank, seven clams later nothing. Thats the only change i've made. Now, Im doing a crap ton of alk but I love the clams for being pretty and interesting animals, the minimal filter benefit is a bonus.
