Just picked this guy up yesterday. My first clam! I've been researching for awhile but can't seem to nail down what kind of clam this is...any help appreciated!

You might get a little more help if you post a picture of the clams outer shell that how you can tell what type of clam, and If it's attached to rocks or the bottom. only certain clams attch them selves.

Ok, here are a few more pics that show the shell and exterior of the clam. Currently, it is not attached to any rock or substrate but I also just bought him.

Malofish - I see you live in San Antonio. I'm headed there this weekend and was wondering if you know of any fish stores that I should check out. I've been to this run down place called Fintique, a nicer place on Bandera and one a little off of I-10 & 410 near a U-haul place. Any more places??

I think it's a maxima, but not exact. checkout www.clamsdirect.com theirs a guy there named barry, he knows everything about clams, also sell the best clams anywhere!!! As far as the local fish shops, there are alot!! I would go to www.maast.org it's a local reef club, their are alot fo cool people there as well as a few experts!! There's a local fish shop form on the homepage, if you need to find me P.M. I'm malofish. hope I helped!!

Crocea. The easiest way to tell is by the shell. The Crocea shell is fairly smooth and it has rounded off ridges to it. A Maxima clamshell has much more defined ridges to it that stick out like little shelves. That is definitely a Crocea.

Croceas are also the most light demanding clams.......Hopefully you will keep him close to the surface if you're only running PC lighting.

Thanks RyeBread and everyone else who chimed in...

The crocea is currently placed directly in the center of my tank and should be getting the most light from this placement. Its about 12" away from my 65W X 2 PCs. Is this distance ok or should I really try to build up my rockwork and get him closer to the lights??

The tank has been up and stable for over a year now with great water parameters.

Personally I would try to get it as close as possible. Only time will tell if the clam will thrive in your system.......if you feed phytoplankton and keep your calcium levels up....it should be possible. Good luck.
