clam mantle not fully extending weird

Just as an update, the clam seems to be doing worse. I thought it was fine, but then I emailed some pictures today and realized that from the 9/30/05 picture to today, the mantle is not extending as much as it was before, the "falling " of the mantle is now taking as much as 50% of the clam (in the picture previously referred it seemed to cover 25% only). This is as of 10/5/05 at night, practically a week since the first symptoms showed up.

I'll keep you posted...

Mine are not showing anything. No improvement or decline. One of them is out now most of the time...but the other 3 are clenched closed most of the time. My girlfriend (who spends more time at home and watching them than I) says that they all come out during the day...but I never see it when I get home. FWIW, they prolly get enough light blasted through their shells even so they dont bleach.

Today I did notice...the bicolor blenny has me wondering. I think it might be nipping the clams after all...or at least scaring them. Before I do a freshwater dip, I am going to remove the blenny and see.

I have noticed something else however. Some of my millipora corals that had those small bleach spots are showing more of it. Maybe another water change is in need.

Mbbuna,

When I refer that I sent some pictures today, i was referring to you. Let know if you did not get them.

Omar try to resend the pics, but for now give the clam a fresh water dip. only do a short one,15min. take RO/DI and match the temp to your tank water and just place the clam in there for only 15min.and then back in the tank and see how it does.it may take a few hours for the clam to open again.dont do it any longer then 15

Friggin !#@$. I removed the bicolor blenny today and within minutes all my clams are back out and havent retracted once.

Anyone want a bicolor blenny?

I suppose the downside of my tank cycling and stabilizing (and me tackling the nitrate/phosphate & organics problem) is that most of the algae that the blenny used to eat has gone. I never noticed it though because it was still fat. Seems it's picked up a taste for clam.

Herbert,

I just came across this thread and found it interesting. Funny! I had the same problem years ago with a bicolor. Those little guys can be a pain if you keep clams. I'm glad you figured out the problem!

Yeah,
I never heard of a bicolor nipping on clams before. I have read about lawnmowers doing that, and I suppose bicolors are pretty similar...but still...Ive never heard of it until I saw it take a really ballsy swipe at one today when the lights came on. I knew it right there. Got him out (the old cloth bag trick...for some reason, he likes to hide in media bags...so I put one in the tank and yanked him out in minutes), and now the clams are out and fine!

[Fish can be freaks! I had a fish a long time ago that use to let me "pet" him. He probably thought I was a cleaner shrimp. Also, I once had a clown fish that wound swim into one of my clams and poke his head out. He didn't bother the the clam and vice versa. QUOTE]Originally posted by Herbert T. Kornfeld

Omar i would give them,or at least the one that looks the worst a short fresh water dip, only like 15min. it could be pinched mantle. the part of the mantle that is sucked in looks very thick, and some of mine ,when the protozan is really active will do that.just remember that the fwd wont cure the PM it will just hold it off.im still waiting to hear back from some one who is doing some testing on this,so hopefully it wont be too much longer till we have this licked

Thanks Mbbuna!!!!!!

Thanks Mbbuna!!!!!!

Of course we can't claim success until fully recovered.

Improvement is significant considering the condition that developed very quicly to a point and then slowly worsened over the course of a week (see previous pictures)

The next picture is as of today (10/9/05), 24 hours after a 15 minutes FWD followed by a 30 minutes immersion in a bowl with phytoplankton and then returned to the tank.

2 other changes (dangerous I know, to do so many changes at the same time) is that I raised the clam about 1.25 inches above the sand and lowered the light fixture by some 1.5 to 2 inches.

Again...thanks Mbbuna! And thanks to all of you who have either been following this thread or contributing with your ideas and suggestions.

Omar :strooper:

P.S. I'm going out of town for the next three days, so I'll report back on its condition Th or Fr (keeping my fingers crossed!).

thats great Omar.:):):) just rember that the FWD realy isnt a cure for PM,but it will keep it in check untill we find the cure

Would a pipefish or some clam cleaning fish help?...or are we talking about something on a smaller scale?

It just seems to be that there must be a natural predator/cleaner as wild ones must have some way of overcoming.

O.k., so it took me a little longer to post again. As of today (10/23/05) clam is doing fine, the mantle shows very significant improvement, although not fully extended as my other clams, but it could either be still on its way to recovery or simply adjusting (remember this was a recent acquisition -from 9/16/05-) to its new environment.

As of today the clam has received two FWD, one on 10/08 and the second on 10/15. Also, I may report that as of 10/15. the clam was firmly attached to the piece of dead coral it's sitting on.

O.k., so here's an updated picture...

I really hope that my experience helps others...
