Clam Police!!!!

I know the Tang Police are very active on this site, but is there such a thing as the Clam Police?? Eventually a clam will be too big for the tank that it is in right?

My point is that I'm looking for a guideline as to what size/kind of clam we can safely keep in our little glass boxes without making the clam live a life of hell.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Um, no? Gigas may grow too large for some tanks, but aside from massive water mineral use they're not too demanding. Keep light on it and keep water parameters in the green and no problem?

Don't think I'm wrong, but if I am please put me in my place.

any clam can out grow a tank depending on the size the tank is. you have to chose a clam that suits your tank.

for reference these are the common tridacnid clams and approx sizes they can reach. in our tanks under optimal conditions i would guess they achieve 3/4 this size approx.

crocea approx 6"
hippopus hippopsus approx. 14"
squamosa approx 16"
maxima approx 16"
dersa approx 24"
gigas approx 54"

I know the smaller ones are harder to keep, but I've see pics of some big clams. My 38 with 40lbs of rock doesn't have much room for a clam that's gonna be 10" in 3 years or so. I can see having to rearrange things as it grows, but I would rather not have to do this often. If there is a clam that stays on the small (6" or so), I would rather go with that.

first on the list and actually doesn't mind hangin out on the LR, the downfall is they require the most light.

this relly wont be a problem... a clam will grow (if your lucky) just about 1/2'' a year... if that ....

maximas grow upto 16 inches in tank conditions? i find that hard to believe, can you tell me the source of info? :)

If your worried about a clam causing the need to rearange your live rock, don't worrie. By the time he's big enough to create that situation you will have moved the live rock several times for dozens of reasons.

clams are cool, Have fun

Now if you all can tell me where you are finding clams that look like this, I'll shut up. LOL
