Clam question.

This clam on one end of my tank insists on positioning itself almost in a sideways manner. I thought they liked facing up to maximize the amount of light they receive. I've repositioned it a few times already, but it ends up doing the same thing. I've also noticed that the edges of it's mantle are a little lighter in color compared to the rest of it. Any ideas?

That crocea looks like a goner. How long have you had it? One of the problems with clams is they usually take about two weeks to show if they are going to croak. The only ones I have had long term success with were the the ones that hung out at the lfs for a while or got from a local. Also, to keep them low you need a powerful light especially the blue ones.

Doesn't look happy at all. What are your water perameters, and light?

Temp-79, PH-8.4, Nitra-0, Cal-460. Lighting is 8 T-5 bulbs @ 39 watts each. I was trying to get a Derasa since they are supposed to like less light than other clams. The clam was a trade, which was sold to the owner as a Derasa, but I was a little skeptical since I couldn't really make out the typical squiggly lines.

I've had it for 2-3 months now. I haven't really seen anything picking at it.

Could be a derasa, hard to tell without close inspection. I lost a few clams also with 8 bulb t5 on the sand at 30 inches. Might not be the lack off light. Who knows. I think moving them a lot ****es them off too. A ton of possibilities. If it was attached to a rock it can be tricky to remove them if not done right. They have a bissal thread that should be cut with a razor. It kills them is pulled on. Too much flow can be bad. I would pull it out and smell it. If you want to barf, toss it. They fowl quickly and are the most ungodly smelling thing. Worse than stinky tofu.

I took a look @ it tonight with the lights off and the bottom where it used to look like muscle fiber is now fuzzy. I think its gone even though it still opens and closes on its own. So disappointing.
