Clam started to receed its mantle

My smaller maxima (about 3") has started to receed. The first odd thing that I noticed is that the shell, which was covered with hair algae started looking clean without intervention on my part. Then I noticed that the clam had added about 1/2 " of shell, but it was then when I noticed it would try to stay inside the shell. Not watching any other things happening, my guess was that one of my tangs had to be nipping (blue tang, kole, sailfin).

Until one day I finally caught the Kole cleaning the shell, and while I at it, ti also nipped the mantle. Unfortunately the kole is one of my favorite fish, but will have to go if this continues. For the same reason (although on my 7" teardrop maxima), a foxface had to go and I wonÃ"šÃ‚´t keep a flame angel, which is my favorite SW fish.

I donÃ"šÃ‚´t care much for SPS, the clams are really my darlings (after my wife and daughter of course!) so anything that goes after them will have to go.

For a while, I thought that maybe because the clam had put so much shell down, it did not have enough fleshy mantle, But seems like it really is the fish bothering it.

How long do you think I can let the fish in to see if it will stop bitting the mantle? What are the chances that it may stop doing it?

Thank you,

Omar :strooper:
