Keeping it Simple
Hey guys,

Just wondering whether on not there is a clam that you can keep healthy and happy under pc's. For example, my tank is 12" tall and has 192 watts of pc. Can I perhaps keep a Derasa Clam? Thanks for the help.

Thumbs up!

Hey Paladin,
Thanks for the tip; I didn't even realize there was forum devoted to solely clams. That's great.

i'm pretty sure a deresa clam would be ok, but i wouldn't try any other clams. If you do try a deresa be sure to try and place it as high as possable, but this could be a challange because they tend to like the sand best.

My nano is 12" tall and I have had a crocea under 80 watts PC for over a year, no problems so far. But of course, I just switched to MH, so I am sure it will be fine. I did not see any extreme growth rates under PCs, but I was able to maintain it.

I have kept a small crocea under 130 watts of pc at all levels of my 18" deep tank for about 6 months. I think you would be fine depending on what type of clam you get.

it's generally considered bad form to keep anything but a few of the deresa species under PCs, and even then you need a lot of PC...

the other clams flat out just won't do well. they may live up to a year, slowly dying over that period, but not long term... and these clams should live a very long time.

There's an LFS up in Williamsport Pennsylvania (sorry, don't remember the name) but his whole deal is (or at least was) keeping everything under PCs. It's definitely doable and I'd say you would be fine with a derasa. He even kept croceas under PCs. For set up though I would definitely reccomend the deresa and keep it up high. Frequent feedings would help too. FWIW...
