clams and substrate

Most all clams are a like when it comes to substrate. They like the sand more and its better for them. You can put them on your rock work if you need to and they will do just fine. Thats what I did with mine anyways.

Maximas and croceas prefer to be attached to something solid and are found high on the reef attached to the rock in nature, the other clams are more sandbed dwellers.

crocea and maximas prefer the rock work.....as they are rock-burrowing clams. Gigas, Squamosa, Hippopus, and deresa do better on a sand substrate.

Hippopus, deresa, squamosa, gigas, maxima, crocea
- order from lowest to highest needs for light intensity

Maximas don't burrow do they? Thus the pronounced ridges on the shell, as opposed to croceas, which do bore?

Maximas do bore.

they put out an acid that dissolves calcium carbonate.

all the clams can and will be found up in the reef. but you can commonly find Gigas and Derasa in sand. Contrary to popular belief Squamosas are reef clams not sand clams.

Hippopus aren't low light clams they are found in the reef top to depths down to 6 meters. the high light low light thing comes from there ability to get food from the water as opposed to light
