Bought a Canon digital Rebel 5 hours ago. Still lots to learn, but here are some cool clam shots. The camera is amazing and is aleady taking some very nice pics right out of the box. :-)

All the clams you see there are Croceas. :-)

I'm still trying to learn how to shoot with this camera. So far, quite impressive right out of the box!

Thanks all!

xrunner1234: I just bought my drebel yesterday. I'm using the kit lens. I've been fooling around a lot and shot over 400 pics yesterday. 95% came out bad. Still looked good by any basic digital cam, but not to the standards of what the D-Rebel can do. Obviously, it's my fault. :-)

I'm using the kit lens and the settings were on automatic macro. I'm not sure if I can pull the exif data since it's d/l'ed into my HD now but I'll learn the how's and do's eventually.

Thanks for the link, it's going to be very useful for me.

The exif data is embedded inside the actual pic. It contains usefull information such as aperture, exposure time, iso, etc. You can look at this data along with your picture to see what you are doing right or wrong.

One way to see it is to right-click on the file and go to properties, then summary.

xrunner1234: I checked out the summery under windows 2000. Unfortunately, I don't see any useful information such as ISO, apeture, etc. Maybe if I copy it back into my scandisk and view it from the camera would work.

BTW, have you noticed a difference between highest quality JPG ~3 meg and RAW 6 meg images? Is it even possible to shoot in 6+ meg JPG? It doesn't seem possible for now.

I would like to shoot in RAW, but it's such a pain to convert it back into JPG to get 6 megs.

XP let's you view the exif data not win2k. Use the Canon file utility and you will see everything. Also, change your LCD view on the camera so after you take a picture you see the histogram with the preview- this is the most usefull to see if you have the correct exposure.

I use jpg. Read these about RAW and jpg

Go through all the tutorials about the Drebel. It will take some time, but you can learn alot about the camera.

DSLR is a whole other world in photography compared to point and shoots. Have fun and if you have questions let me know.:)

What do you mean here? I'm confused? Back to 6meg?

Thanks for the tips.

As for the 6 Meg thing, I was wondering if there's a way to shoot in JPGs that are 6megs in size, just like RAW. I could convert RAW into 6MEG JPG on the computer but they look the same compared to the camera's largest JPG quality setting which is around 3meg in size. Well, I just learned it doesn't work that way. I guess I can always shoot RAW and big JPEGS at the same time, but 512MEG flash suddenly looks very small. :-)

Thanks,

James

umm...pretty photos...but is that a sohal tang? Aren't they supposed to be in HUGE tanks? Sorry...I'm not the tang police, just wondering how your fish is faring in a 70g?

Yes, that's a Sohol Tang. It was under 5" when I bought it back in December. It's probably closer to 6" now. It's doing amazing right now (no joke here, just see the pics) and is the boss of the tank. When and if it out grows my tank, I'll put it in a bigger tank or give it away.

BTW, this was a very hard pic to shoot. I'm hoping I can catch the boss stretching its fins again.

nice shot...it's an amazing fish...I remember somewhere on here some people ganging up on some poor fellow b/c the fish wasn't in a tank larger than 100+gallons. I'm looking to get a 90g and would love to have one of these as the prize fish. Where'd you get him? if you don't mind me asking...how much was he?

Thanks,

I used to read a lot of those messages when I first registered. I actually kinda got tired reading them so I haven't read one in a while.

I rarely say that have a Sohol in a 72G (which also includes a purple and a yellow, but the yellow is now in my 72G refuge since the purple and yellow don't quite get along).

At any rate, the tang police has not bothered me yet. If they do, I just add another tang in my 72G. :-)

If you plan to add tangs in a smaller tank, just make sure they're proportionally small compared to your tank and if they out grow, go to plan B.

I bought mine from Big Al's in Toronto. I paid $60CDN for it during boxing week sale. I think regular price for a medium is $79.

It's a nice tang to have and if you plan to keep other tangs in your 90G, make sure you add this one last.
