clamshell chip in tank

So when i filled up the tank i heard a pop and a piece shot off. its a large tank it didnt leak or burst or anything but i was wondering if i could run the tank as is. I can fill the crack with silicone. Its a little above half way up the tank.

anyone ever ran a tank like this?

i have a chip like that on a 75 that has been there many many years. Other then that i would hate to try and say either way.If its brand new tank and you can get it replaced relatively easy i would do that.

it was filled to the top when it popped off didnt leak or anything

i am guessing it was chipped moving the tank and just did not fall out until you started filling the tank.

Do you still have it full of water ?

no i instantly drained it but it took an hour with a python. im currently filling it right now. im just watching it fill closely

I wouldn't chance it personally. Consider the cost of the tank vs what you'd have to deal with if it did leak. (Maybe it's just me, but if there was a chip like that on my tank, that's all I would notice and stare at it constantly.) I had a small 20g with a tiny nick out of part of the corner and it ended up splitting all the way up that pane from there about a year later.

tanks full of water again. so now i see by the seam is these lines. I think they were they were there before it chipped are these bubbles in the seams?

I don't have a ton of experience with acrylic over the years, but I've seen the bubbles in the seams on several, including mine. I watch mine closely to ensure bubbles/lines don't change, been up for about 11 months and haven't seen any changes, however that's a short amount of time, really.

For the chip that came out, I wouldn't feel comfortable with using it. As others have mentioned, considering the cost of the tank and the damage that would be done if the tank burst, it's not worth the risk.

Yeah. I have to agree with others here. That chip of glass may seem insignificant but it's weakening the structural integrity of the tank. Drain it and replace it. It's just not worth the disaster that could happen tomorrow or five years from now.

Huh. Sorry about that, missed it being glass. I even showed it to my husband and asked how acrylic would chip like that. I'll blame it on the long day I guess, lol.
