Clarion Angels

True!!!
Better let the sharks eat them where they are over populated, caught by small nets with no baits.
Or even better , let them be Grouper baits ,they are the favourite Grouper bait of the Mexican navy guys, why not? they are the easiest to catch.

Yeah, but they have been known to venture into US waters, if you are lucky enough to catch one there.

Julio
I think you have a better chance to win the lottery:D
Unless somebody will come with an underwater Clarion detector.

Julio
I dont think you can get them in international waters, they are around 4 islands and in huge numbers , been talking with a guy who's been there and he's telling me that when you take a c$%p out of the yacht you see an orange wave coming to explore what just got in the water.

There are MANY thousands!

Yes it is not legal , just cause a mexican dude decided it's not.
It got nothing to do if they are endangered or not, of course they could have decided to give permits for ,let's say 500 specimens a year, to be collected , even by the goverement itself so all the profits will stay in Mexico , but not, they deicided a full ban, and thats why there are crazy prices, and when there are crazy prices, people will do crazy things.

Is it legal for the navy to catch and cut them for bait??? no it's not , I did not hear of any military court for those navy guys, even though it's done on daily basis, nor I heard any complaint from US fish & wildlife cause of it.

Bali is the number one exporter for Majestic Angels, do you think there are more Majestic Angels in Bali than Clarions in Revillagigedo islands?

I saw a passer angel and clarion angel hybrid in hk aqua magazine, that's a perfect combination! [/B]

Here's a recent pic of a clarion passer hybrid.

Clarion x Passer hybrids are still coming in from time to time from central America.
They are rare, but there is no ban on the country of origin to collect or export them , so we can see one, once in awhile , usualy in passer shipments and usually with a huge price tag.

Keefsama, if your passer is a little darker and still juvi colors, so it is a normal passer.
Otherwise, you are lucky.

Unfortunately I was outbit on this fish. I heard it went over 5K and is now on its way to Hong Kong. Nice fish but just too rich for me.

the one i have is very similar just has a few hints of blue bars on it as well but its close if i could get a clear shot of him i will but hes always on the move

Sarwa,
I dont think HK will pay 5K FOB for that hybrid as that is the price they are sold here retaild the last couple of time I saw them.

When was it shipped?I'll try to look it up.

Sarwa,
I think you were right.
Yesterday the fish was offered for sale.
Today it was no longer available.
I never saw it.
Waz this fish in LFS or wholseller in America?
Can you give some more info?

I don't know exactly where this fish is/ was. It was offered to me by a collectible fish broker but apparently there were several brokers bidding on the fish. Really high end (2K +) fishes rarely hit the LFS so I'm quite certain that the fish was in a wholesaler and stored away from public view.

I can PM you the broker number if you want. I've slowed down a bit in the high end fish market so I don't mind sharing my source.

I've bid on about 4 rare angels over the past 3 months and have been the winner seems to come out of Hong Kong everytime.

Good luck. The areas where Clarions were collected are off limits due to its reclassification as a military zone by the Mexican government. Sometimes unethical collectors who have the correct paperwork to catch Passer angels drift to areas where both species co-exist and mix Clarions and the Passers together. To the untrained eye they look like an orange Passer, or are passed off as such. The Clarion population is also strong and until such time that it is removed from CITES, it should stay in the ocean. Unethical collection practices should be a avoided by all members of this hobby and should not be condoned through payment of the dollar.

mile sq. reefer

I find no mention of Clarions on any CITES Appendix (I, II or III):

http://www.cites.org/eng/app/appendices.shtml

It is not endangered, so that makes sense. It is protected by the Mexican government, which doesn't make sense, since they have never studied the impact aquarium collection would make on the population. They (Mexico) do however, allow the widescale rape of the same island group (Revilligigedos) by comercial and sport fisherman.

Mile sq. reefer.
You're wrong.
Clarion is not on cites and is not considered endangered species.
There are no passers in the islands where the clarion angel is common (Revillagigedos) so of course there are no hybrids.
The hybrids comes from the mainland shores and might even be legal.(depends if fishing is legal at point of collection).

Sarwa, you mean the last 4 rare angels you saw were shipped to Hong Kong?
What angels were they?

I will PM you now.

Tks.
