I use a 3 inch for my ocellaris, and my female is huge. They handle it and seem to like it because they can "guard" it by backing into the pot during the evening.
Just my 2 cents. If it has a hole in the bottom, cover that up with something, I just glued a piece of tile over the hole. I read that they don't like the hole.
Mine also don't seem to mind the hole. In fact, this last time when they laid their eggs they did it around the hole. I am not sure how I will aerate them now if I take the pot out, lol
