clean sandbed

How do people keep their sandbeds so nice looking? Mine has rocks, different colors (algaes most likely), etc. And it's more yellow than white now. Should I have more CUC or what? I only have 7 snails in my tank.

A fighting conch kept my sand stirred the most. At least until it got caught under a couple rocks and is now gone.

I have had two of those little guys go carpet surfing on me even with covers for my tank. The first one was my fault as I ditched my sugar fine sand bed for aragomax. He made it through the first night without sand and when I went to the LFS to get 120lbs. of sand I came home to find our cat, Fred batting him around the carpet. Second one found a nice 1/4" hole in my eggcrate to jump out. I have since re-done my cover for the tank, and really would like to try one more before I give up on them totally. They say the 3rd time's a charm...I hate doing it to the fish though as we need sustainability in this hobby and I am a big promoter of tank reared fish, and me having this happen two times and possibly a third just doesn't sit well with me. Thus the reason for not getting another one after it happened a second time. If you get any type of goby just be sure you have all the little nooks and possible escape hatches on your tank covered. Even if it looks too small for them to jump out, these gobies will find a way IME.

The pic above is a video - click on it and you can see him at work.

How the sand started before the goby.

FYI, your water will be cloudy with sand for about a MONTH :hmm3:

After that

I would certainly add some more snails & definitely try out a fighting conch. I have the same goby as Indy in my 75 & they make quite the mess. Piles of sand everywhere. The conch makes no mess & does an awesome job on my 29.

Is that a diamond watchman or what is it? I would rather have a goby than a conch just because I like gobies. The only thing I'd be worried about is that the goby will burry any corals I have on the sand and get sand in the clam (once I get one).

What other livestock is in the tank?

Cleaner shrimps and peppermints are interesting to watch, and pick at rock and substrate.

Just gotta make sure they are compatible with the rest of your tank.

I've had 2 or 3 diamond gobies, they all managed to go carpet surfing at one time or another. Even with eggcrate on the top.

Orange diamond goby... typically the orange diamond stays on the sandbed and doesnt carry sand and drop it on the rocks... however your future clam could get "sanded" .. :worried:

just keep in mind that those gobies eat any beneficial creatures in your sand bed. Pods, dinos, algaes, etc. all eaten and gone. Not If your trying to use a DSB or attempting to this is not the fish to get.

My diamond watchman is very industrious. He turns my entire sandbed on my 150gal each day and does a fantastic job. The only issue is that he likes things to be his way. Sometimes he gets carried away and will bury my brains on the bottom or dig burrows under them.

Don't know if I want that. lol.

If he's bad and burys corals (like the new lobo the wife put in today) my wife just scolds him by staring him down. He moves away and eventually gives up. Usually just need to blow the sand off with a turkey baster and all looks good again. Very cute fish, probably my wifes favorite out of the bunch. Its very neat watching them build their dens.

I'm in a similar situation. My sand bed(in my 5 month old system) is coved in brown and purple algea. If I sift it myself it looks worse with the algae covered sand peppering the clean sand.

I read and article on sand sifting gobies and how they turn your live sand bed into a dead sand bed. Putting them in an aquarium is altogether detrimental to the system and the goby.

Do fighting counches and sand sifting stars also remove beneficial organisms? I imagine most tank inhabitants remove some beneficial organisms, but not to the extent of damaging the system.

I got hundreds of snails from reef leaners that did not do much. A single diamond goby cleaned the entire sand bed every day. Not all will jump, so don't let anyone's story about theirs jumping stop you from getting one.

I don't think the goby will kill the sand bed. They really just clean off the top layer don't they? You'll still have all the anaerobic bacteria right?
