How many snails and crabs should someone jabe in a 24 gallon online says 50 snails and 25 hermits, that just sounds like to much to me?

If you get crabs make sure that they will stay small. I ended up getting a couple white striped ones that killed huge turbos for their shell. They then proceeded to knock every frag off the rocks like a wrecking crew.

I've heard that a lot of people go with the rule of 1 cuc per gallon. I think it's more realistic to go with 1 per 2-3 gallons. I have 1 per 3 gallons right now and they seem to be doing great. If you put too many, they'll starve to death.

Even with those recommendations it would only last so long before most of them die due to starvation. The way I did it was to only add a couple at a time and continue to do so if more were needed.

You don't need crabs. They can be entertaining to watch, but mostly live off the food you feed and are just as likely to eat something you want gone as something you want to keep.
You don't need snails either, but unlike the crabs, they will noticeably cut down on algae. I have the 'strombus grazers' that reproduce in my tank - the more algae the more the population grows, so I don't think about how many. I have no idea if the strombus grazers will reproduce in a 24 gallon system. Some people like seeing the larger snails.
I'd just buy one of the smaller packs, unless your LFS sells individuals at a reasonable price. I'd want about 10 snails in a tank that size.

I've tried many different snails and crabs over the years. Based on your tank, I'd say 2-3 trochus snails, and 5 blue legged hermits or scarlett reef hermits.
The Trochus snails do well in most aquariums, and the crabs I recommended won't get big enough to kill them for their shells. Those snails can also right themselves.
