I started up my 125 about a week ago... when should you bring in a clean up crew into a new tank? also what is recommended as far as how much of what should be in the tank to keep it clean?
I would wait to make sure ammonia and nitrites are zero...from any recuring or dieoff on liverock added and nitrates are managable like 10 ppm or less... Best thing to have in this hobby is patience. I would give it another week or two and then add one.
If you do not want to order online... from reeftopia or other cleanup crew places,
Salty Critter has some pretty good deals on cleanup crews... For a 125 I would get the large cleanup crew or if you want to start smaller get the small cleanup crew (still lots of critters) and add some extra emerald crabs (have at least 5) and some extra trochus snails...(have at least 10 total) and then later if all is well you can add a second small package in a month or two.
Do you have sand? If you have sand I would get a bunch of nassarius snails as well. (maybe 20)
Emeralds and Trochus snails I have found to be about the best bang for your buck. Trochus will breed in the tank with good parameters so they should replenish themselves. Astreas are good workers but if they fall over they pretty much die because they cannot flip themselves over like Trochus snails and the hermits will have dinner.
You will spend a decent amount of cash on a good cleanup crew but they should last a long time. After 5 years and two tank moves I finally had to replenish some of my crew in my 120.
Check them out, group buy we just had from them. John is a great guy, here is the link to the custom cleanup crew request form, you fill it out and he will get back to you within a couple of hours with his recommended cleanup crew.
