cleaner shrimp + pistol shrimp/goby = certain doom?

HI all, I currently have a cleaner shrimp in my nano tank and am upgrading to a 90 gallon. I wanted to have a pistol shrimp and goby in the new 90 gallon, can the old cleaner shrimp live in there too? or will he have to stay in the old nano (will be a quarantine tank).

Also, is the pistol shrimp really load? or audible often? My tank is about 10 feet from where i work everyday. Its an in-walll setup so i don't hear much of anything, but a constant clicking might drive me mad.. or at-least moreso.

thanks for the info, getting excited now about having a pair.

Do you have any suggestions on the best possible match for a pistol shrimp? just your standard watchman goby? I really like the dracula goby but would go with whatever has the highest success rate of pairing with the pistol shrimp.

they will be fine.

i got one pair of yashi and red banded shrimp, with cleaner shrimp in my 7 gallon tank, no problem so far.

Nice Yasha pistol and goby pair. I don't know where my guys are at. I got 1 in the main tank with the yashagoby and 2 small ones in my 20frag/qt.

Would a 20 gallon be too small for a pair such as those?

Hi, Grove city...used to be there every year during Racing season...nice little town.

What a beautiful Pistol Shrimp...what is it called?

The LFS called it Red Banded pistol shrimp

Definitely going to get the pair. I think I can get them at Fosters & Smith too for just about the same price as the LFS. Think I will go with the High Fin Red Banded Goby for now. Is the sugar fine Oolite Aragamax best for them? I noticed on the reef blend that my Scissortail Gobies' gills are a little red sometimes and wonder if it is the courseness of the reef sand? Not bleeding, but just a little raw.

Now if I can learn how to take awesome pictures like that I shall be a happy camper. They are really nice.

Went to order and Pistol was OOS...Soooooooo here we go again...e=mail me when available. Story of my life...last time I ended up with 4 beautiful wild caught Neon Gobies though. I am rinsing Oolite to mix with the reef sand. Is that going to be fine enough for them.??

sebrojfr...I feel like we stole your thread...you still there? Did you get your Goby yet? I am ordering the High Fin Red Banded one. I would also like the Yashi (Yasha) like Smilodon's too. I want them ALL !!!!! lol

lol, not in the least. I've been following along, listening and researching. My tank is still cycling rock so I have a ways to go. I did however get my Tek-Lights in today and wow.. I never thought T-5 could look so good.

I really like the yashi, allthough I dont know about the red banded shrimp. ( I think it just reminds me of when I had a coral bandit shrimp before my cleaner... and he was a *****).

The only other question I would have with these guys is their compatibility with the rest of the tank inhabitants. I guess the one I would be concerned with is the Psychedelic mandarin I wish to get one day, since I suppose he would be lower in the tank mostly. Everything else is pretty standard. A small tang maybe, my current maroon clown and BTA, and maybe a foxface.

You'll need to mix something with the oolitic sand in order for the shrimp to be able to make a solid burrow. Sugar sand will collapse really easily. It's usually just a matter of sprinkling some larger particles/shells around the base of the rocks, so that they can engineer a proper tunnel.

I personally would just use one of the reef blends, but you can get away with mixing the particles...

sebrofjr...thanks bunches for sharing the thread. More fun that way I think. Glad you got your lighting...that's something in the far future for me...I just use the spiral kitchen type 50/50...supports the Chaeto wonderfully. I don't think you have to worry about your other inhabitants unless they bother the burrow. I think you would do better with the Red Banded Pistol as they are (according to what I've read) more peaceful. Nothing like the Coral Banded Beast...I hate those things. I had one that literally was eating my Hippo Tang alive. He had the lateral line disease (lightening storm) and the shrimp would ride him, pulling out pieces of his flesh and eating. UGH. Flushed him. I know I shouldn't have but it made me sick.

I don't think a 25 gallon will support a Mandarin...they require tons of copepods , and more space. They are so pretty too.

Superstretch, I just mixed in 30 lbs of the Oolite with the 25 lbs of reef mix last night...I'll put lots of LR rubble pieces in too. The reef mix has shell pieces too. I like it better...not so many dust storms. lol.

Nice animals and GREAT pictures!!

smilodon, I should have asked first, but I will now...is it OK if I use the pic above for my computer wallpaper? My husband can't believe I put it there instead if my wolflhounds, but it is so pretty.????

Lost 2 shipments last week...was sick and hubby and sis n law acclimated....3 peppermint shrimp and 2 High Fin Red Band Gobies...what a bummer...F&S is sending me the combined losses plus I pay Sat fee UGH but get 1 Yashi (in this thread pic) White Fin Goby and Tiger something Pistol. I still have Tangarora Goby but haven't seen his Red Band Pistol since day one. Keep hoping. Lost my Wonderful Bree (Mantis). Putting matched Neon Gobies in her 35 gal Hex. Think they will like that?

She had a reef=collapse and her pvc burrow came apart..I think something fell on her and broke something in her carapace. She tried to molt it off, but just found her dead in the AM. At lease I didn't have to watch the "death roll"..so sad. I have her in my freezer. She was almost 6 inches long and so pretty. Her rapts are still bright orange. I had just bought her a new S shaped PVC burrow that I could see from both ends and wouldn't come apart. ...too late though...I feel terrible about it. She had such a precocious personality. Maybe I will get on of the smaller ones later next winter.

Having a ball with these Shrimp and Gobies. I have a matched pair of Neon Cleaner Gobies. They are going into a 20H and the Tangaroa and Yashi are going into the 20L when it is ready. I want everything to be perfect...Need to get 2 red-banded Pistols that are bigger than 1/2 inch though. Know anyone that has them?

Thanks for asking about Bree. What Mantis are you trying to catch?
