Cleaner wrasse and a royal gramma?

Since the two have sort of similiar (long thin) body types can they be housed together in my 50 gallon?

Colors obviously completely different.. Does that make a difference?

Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?

Yes, skip the cleaner wrasse please. Those are fish best left in the ocean as one would rarely, if ever, have enough fish for them to clean. I believe they are obligate parasitic eaters which means they only eat parasites off of fish and you'll never have enough fish for them to feed off of, especially in your 50. There are other wrasses that are much more colorful and suitable for your tank, like a carpenter's or flasher wrasse for example. Best of luck.

Namaste

If you want something to clean your fish, cleaner shrimp are fantastic, being affable and hardy!

Yes I have a cleaner shrimp....
This is just exactly the kind of information I was looking for!
So no cleaner wrasse for me! Thanks so much everyone!

You could try neon gobies they are also cleaners. They are so small that they really dont add alot to your bioload.

I like the cleaner wrasse. I have one, and it does do a great job of cleaning the rest of the livestock. Everyone in the tank seem to like him. Sometimes they(the rest of the fish) are in line or fighting who gets the cleaning next!
The wrasse character do not conflict with the gramma, so I dont see why you cant have both, providing you have room.
I recommend the wrasse since it helps a lot with the well being of the rest of the tank inhabitants. It also has unique character thats fun to watch.

Larah, I loved the way the cleaner wrasse moved through the water, but found out the high mortality rate.

Some of the other wrasses are also known to clean fish. When I was in picking up some Halichoeres chrysus (Canary Wrasse) I saw a larger angel on it's side with it's fin in the "air" getting cleaned by a bunch of them.. The other species are not picky on other foods and only clean because they like to pick at things.

Can someone post a picture of a cleaner wrasse....Dont know if I ever seen one.

Larah......What happend to the Beemer...??

LOL! The Beemer is just fine! But everyone knows me on here
with my Coral Beauty as my avatar so I changed back....

A cleaner wrasse is longish and thin with a black stripe down the middle of it's body on a white background with a blue/ purple tail a yellow head and somtimes a pink blush to the middle of it's body.. I think they are very attractive and fairly small.....
I am hunting downa photo as we speak....errrrr type.......

just because it is surviving doesn't mean it is happy and flourishing. a very high percentage of these fish die in captivity, and a lot of people get them because they look cool and want to "see how long they can keep them". getting a fish to see if you can make it thrive is one thing, getting one to see if you can make it survive is another.

I'm not the type of person who buys fish because they look cool. I've had mine for quite sometime and has been a great member of my tank community. Alwyas swimming with Majestic Angel and the tangs.

Maybe someday I could telephaticaly communicate with him and ask him if he's happy.

OMG Mike that was Hilarious! LOL!
Though I do agree that they are best left in the wild...
I am not getting one because of that....
