Cleaning Aquapod question

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get the blue sponges out of the back of the 24g Aquapod with out squeezes them and releases debris back into the water? How often does everybody clean these?

I don't have an aquapod, but a JBJ Nano. Pretty much the same design.

How often do you remove them? and why would you have so much junk in them? Mine really don't have a lot of stuff in them.

I remove and rinse mine when I do a water change (bi weekly).
I use the water I remove to rinse them.

I guess it could have been because I didnt rinse the sand when I put it in the tank. Newbie mistake!! Hopefully they wont be so dirty next time. It had been two weeks after adding the sand that I pulled them out to clean them and they were FILTHY.

ok if you do weely 2 gallon water changes it won't be so dirty. Jsut clean them while doign the water change so that you can take all the bad water out. but that won't happen if you kep up on water changes.
