Cleaning dry aragonite sand

I have read that you can clean dry (not l"live") aragonite sand by laying the bag on its side, cutting two holes in it, running a garden hose is one, and allow water to flow out the second hole. When the water starts to run clear, you can then transfer the sand to a RO/DI bath before adding to the tank or sump...

Seems like a real time-saver over rinsing in a big tub right out of the bag...

Has anybody tried this successfully? If so, tell me how you did it...

Thanks.

I have not, but that hole has to be very small and seems that it would take as much time as the other method.

Wondering why the sand wouldn't just run out of the hole with this method..think a bucket or tub is the way to go..

I did not try that but it sounds like it would work. But like said above I am not sure it would save much time. I went to HD and got a paint strainer and put about 15 lbs of the argonite at a time in it and rinsed it thru that. Took about half an hour to do 120 lbs.

I guess if you conrolled the amount of flow through the bag it would work, but i think a 5 gallon bucket works just as nice :)

What kind of paint strainer? (trying to visulaize)

Thanks.

They are a clothmesh type material used to box paint and strain out any dirt/particles. They are made in several sizes to fit on 1g, 5g, and 30g-55g bins so that as you pour the paint in the bucket/bin the paint goes thru to the bottom but the particles do not. In our case the sand stays in but the dust gets washed away.

Can you point me to some place where this can be obtained? A link or store?

Thanks

Just put the sand in a pillow case and run water in it. Easy as pie.

Silk or cotton?

My wife is pretty understanding, but I don't know if she would go for me washing sand in her pillowcases...

This is how I have always done it.

Put some sand in a bucket (( 2 gallon )), and swish it around while running under water in a bathtub.

Then drain,

Repeat about 4 times, and end up with this.

So easy...

So easy...

Todd,

You make it look so easy... :D

I think that's what I'll probably do, but I'll use a garden hose and do my rinsing in the back yard... ;)

Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, Shermin Williams, DuPont or any other place that sells paint. Not sure about walmart.
