Cleaning hair algae off live rock help

He didn't say anything about there being a rule of searching before posting questions like this over and over...He was simplay saying if more people used the search function of the forum to try and figure out their problem before just posting something about it....there must me so many posts about the same exact thing such as what does cycling mean? what test to i need to do? algea outbreak!?!?!? RC is here to help everyone even the veterans at times, but just about every question ive seen people ask can be answered by a quick search. I am new here and very new to saltwater aquariums but i also search on RC use youtube and other google searches to find what im looking for before i just post on here...

Basically. If you come here everyday, youll see basically the same posts over and over.

Hair algae, cyano, cycling, lighting, leds, and so on. Its easy to search for generally most topics.

Completely understood and yes you are correct. Ive been pretty much living on this forum since ive even had the idea of getting an aquarium. Just researching and researching and more researching. Every step of the way in this hobby from the beginning is going to have its difficulties and test us new reefers on the skills that we have learned from you veterans. One of the best tools ive used besides this website is youtube. If you youtube different problems you encounter or just how to do something not only do they explain it to you but you also get to see what equiptment/tools they use and how they use them....Makes the learning process go a little more smoothly.

Ok so i need to get a few test kits to test these parameters. i have about 11 different types of beginner corals already in my tank. Does coral make that big of a difference in my bioload? Im sure depending on some they do. I have two mocha clowns and two cromis. About 6 nar snails and maybe 4 hermits. i run a 30g sump on a 75 display. Nwb 150 reef octopus, deep sandbed with live rock and chaeto. All together about 120lbs of live in case anybody wanted to know my specifics. How do you control your nutrients better? Ive just been siphoning and doing a 20% change every 2 weeks: is that enough?

That's fine for now. You might also want to use a turkey baster to blow detritus off of your live rock.

As I mentioned previously, hair algae (and algae in general) is normal in newer tanks. I've never had a tank that didn't go through an algae phase.

Let things play out. Nothing good in this hobby happens fast. Unless the algae starts crowding out other livestock, I'd just remove by hand that which is easily accessible.

Hobbyists that tend to have "knee-jerk" reactions the second they notice something out of line don't usually last that long. Slow and steady wins the race.

I currently do not have test kits for other parameters besides amonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph. I know i need to get reef kits but im waiting on some extra cash. I do changes 20% every two weeks. Should i be doing them once a week?

Theres your problem;you bought a light, a tank, liverock, coral, fish, equipment but you dont have the ability to check your parameters....the most important part!! Change your water 7 times a week if you want it wont do you any good if you dont know whats in it. Sell some of your coral buy a proper test kit so you can start at the beggining.
Goodluck

Yeah, this forum would probably run much quicker if they were more strict about using the search button before posting new threads.

If all "help, algae," "help, everything is dead" and "what LED should I pick" posters would use the search button before posting, RC would probably only have a quarter of the posts it has.

Yeah but reef central is a business that sells ads based on users and their level of engagement, and the best way to show clients that users are engaged in the site is having them post the same thing over and over again.

Live rock cleaner

Live rock cleaner

Made my own tool out of the siphon for vacuuming the bottom. I installed a battery operated rotating toothbrush inside the vacume tube. While doing a water change it turn on the tooth brush to clean green algae off live rock while the water sucks it out so it dont go all over my tank.
