Cleaning Refugium?

I have a 19" HOB refugium, and I was wondering how often I should clean it out.

Clean it out when the detritus starts to collect too much, otherwise you may not have to.

The detrius was getting pretty bad, so I went ahead and cleaned it up.

Is there a possibility of too much cleanup?

I clean my giant refugium (55 gal) once a week with my water changes.
