Cleaning Sump

Should be fine , but why is there so much un wanted debris in there. If you have good water flow debris would find it hard to collect.

Well i would be afraid of any vac waste getting in the system. Oils and cleaners ect..
If its clean then have fun.

I have one just for my sump. My sump is crystal clear in all sections. I think it really helps promote overall tank health.

About once a month these days. I drain my sump almost completely when doing waterchanges (I pump the water out and down the tub). So at that time I give it a quick little vacuum soak the pumps (two returns, skimmer, phospahte reactor in vinegar, etc, etc. Takes me about an hour to do all the cleanings and about 5 min to get it all back together.

maybe this will help, i have my drains directly in front of the inlet of my skimenr, whens debris gets past that, i installed a maxi jet 1200 since i only have live rock in that chamber, the outlet of the maxi jet leads to skimmer section again so debris is all collected by skimmer. hope this helps

I use a shop vac to vac the sump from time to time. The shop vac will spill over when full so It's best to put it somewhere that can get wet. I put mine in a bathtub across the hall and use a long hose. It works out great. It's not really on a regular schedule so I do it when ever if feel the need or feel like messing with it. It's a great way to clean up detritus out of a bubble trap. I will usually do it when I feel like doing a water change and cleaning up the sump a little at the same time.
