For external pumps, I use 50% simply to give me more fluid to circulate.
For powerheads and internal pumps, I run them sitting in 100% vinegar.
I let them run in the vinegar for a minimum of an hour, then remove. wipe off any non calcareous gunk, then run them with tap water to rinse for about 20 minutes.
Pull powerhead off line
Teardown powerhead
Inspect components
soak in 50% 20-30 min.
Rinse components and repeat
Assemble powerhead
Test
Put back on line.
I take them apart and soak them in 100% vinegar. I usally soak them for a couple hours then just rinse or the gunk if they are really loaded with coraline I soak them over night in 100% vinegar. the only think you have to watch is that if you soak them more than 24 hours (ie..48-72hrs) in 100% vinegar it will corrode any rubber parts like suction cups and seals.
I did it once by accident when I went away over a weekend and forgot i was soaking a powerhead, but I did learn a valuable lesson.
