Need opinions on the placement of the intakes and returns on the back wall of the tank.

an NC guy in a CO forum :)...

for a closed loop.... i like to intake low and return high... makes the tank turnover really well with less dead spots. (not so low that you suck sand, if you have it.... and not so high that you splash water.)

i also like to see wavemaking devices on loops like oceansmotions, seaswirls, or wavy-sea.

some people like to shoot water straight at corals... i prefer to make one big whirlpool so that they is good water movement throughout the tank and not jet blasting the tissue off the corals. :)

c'mon guys, I need advice here. It's being suggested that I not drill the tank and go over the top with the CLM.

Here is what I decided on. There will also be a 1" pipe that goes up the back of the tank, over the top via a hole in the canopy (will be threaded so I can remove it and the canopy if need be) and run along the center brace and then turn down via line lock into the front of the tank on either side of the center brace to give flow in the front.

Looks good Paul, that's exactly what I was thinking when we talked. :) I guess we'll GET'R DONE next Saturday unless someone can point out any failures to this idea? The pressure at the returns should be almost no-existant and the drains I think are spaced sufficiently to still provide strength.

I'd move those outside returns inward about 6 more inches. The reason is with locline and a Y I think the outside leg of the y will be close to the edge of the tank and you'll end up pointing it straight ahead, instead of pointing it outward a bit, does that make sense, I'd press the loclines together and hold them up to the spots you want them at and see, maybe that will help?
Chris

Also i noticed you had only 2 returns? I think on a dart thats going to be pretty strong pressure, i'd do 3 rather than cut down the output, why not make full use of the pump right?

o.k. I'm stupid i re-read and se that the 3rd goes over the top and down into the tank, good idea!

Thanks, Chris, I will check that out. I just picked up 7" more of tank space so that spot may work.
