what is a good pump to use. i will have about 3 - 4 feet of head loss.
closed loop on a 20g??????

Im a newbie in reef aquariums and am in the stage of setting up a 20 gal. I have been wondering the same question and came up with a solution that would"kill 2 birds with one stone". Run a fluval 105 with a DSB in it. AT 125 gph you add 6x flow to what you have for the sump and get the advantage of a dsb.

i am looking for a pump around 600 gph to replace 2 Maxi-Jet 1200s that i am currently using.

You could probably do a mag7 or something. I would have two outlets and one inlet. I also wouldn't drill the tank-- tanks that small (thin glass) shouldn't be drilled if you can get away with it. When they bow (as all tanks do) the glass won't bend uniformly and put pressure along the holes and it will crack.
I'd have inlets and outlets go up and over the tank. The headloss won't be that bad. I've got a mag 3 with 4 feet of head loss and a few 90 degree elbows, and it still churns the water pretty well in my 29 gallon.

can Mags been run externally? i did not think thry could

I personally would get the tank drilled...but thats just me, i have seen planty of 20 gallons being drilled, is can be risky but once its over with it helps out alot....and if it doesnt well in this hobby the price of a 20 gallon is probably one of the cheapest expences.
Have you figure out if you are drilling or not?
IOf not check out melevs site, and look at the closed loop w/SCWD...no drilling for this closed loop.
But to the answer to your question i would use a mag 7 and they can be run internally or externally.
