Closed loop question

I see all these big systems or even small one's with a closed loop for flow. From the pics it looks like may of these are simply a hole in the side of the tank that is plumbed to a high output pump. My question is, "How do these system keep from sucking in there fish?". Maybe I'm missing something but if you running 2000gph through a 100 gallon tank and there is just a hole in the side for intake, your gonna loose some fish from being sucked in.

Depending on how much flow you plan to push, you can split your inlets (still use the screens).
