Closed Loop?

COMAS Rocks!
I hear this term all over the forums, can somebody please explain in lamen terms how a closed loop is set up and the pro's and con's for me? Just curious about my reefing options.

A closed loop is when both the intake and the return are in the water with no access to air between them. kind of like a cannister fliter set up.

The idea is to get a good pump, suck water out and pump it back. The only use is to increase water flow. It removes the pump from the tank, so it doesnt heat the water up.

Does that help?

A closed loop is a system of circulation that usually eliminates the use of powerheads and high flow return pumps. For a basic closed loop, you would need two holes drilled in the back of the tank plumbed to a pump. The pump draws water from one hole and pumps it back in through the other hole. More than one drain and return hole can be plumbed to a pump.

Here is pwhitby's closed loop through his 600g tank.
