Hi there, I just wish to know at what hieght you put the hole to supply the pump from the water level. Its just my concerns about not letting the pump run dry as the water may lower.

IMO the pump should be low, maybe a little less than half way down. You dont want it so low that it sucks in any sand. But you dont want it to create a tornado and suck in air from the sirface.

You can put it anywhere just not below the water level, i recommend in the middle of the tank.

I think Fish_wiz meant "not above water level". And as kraze pointed out, you don't want it just barely below the water surface either, or it's going to suck in air from the surface. Depending on how powerful the pump is, you may actually want it draining from a couple holes to reduce the suction at any one. I have a closed loop, but my tank's not drilled (I use an over the back feed), so I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience.

I guess I just wanted it to be clear to the person with the question. Had I not had some experience those two statements would have confused the hell out of me.

I have mine slightly above the middle but far down enough from the top but definitely not at the bottom lower portion.... I'm just teasin' .

I had the same worries when I did my closed loop and decided to place it in middle and have been fine with it since. Mine's a 180G tank so I had 24" of height to play however. It would help to let us know what size tank as well as the intended return pump. HTHs.

Yes, well thank you all. I don`t want to brag but I have 30 inches to play with so from the information received I shall opt for just over half way up the water depth. thanks again. I take on board your comments about suction as I shall be using an Ocean Runner 6500, maybe I will drill two holes to reduce this effect.
