Cloudy Water new tank

Hello everyone!!!
So my 90 Gallon tank is going well. I have filled it up with RO water (monday) and checked all the plumping and all seems to be working as planned with only self induced hickups. (Filled the fish tank with water and thought "wow" that's a really quiet pump only to find out it was not working. Another 10 min of investigation and sucking the tube thinking I need to prime it by siphoning water thur it it still did not work. Then another 5min and I realized I had not supplied power to it (my brother-in-law said "OH you had the O-F-F switch on" lol). Once I turned the power on I noticed the spout that the water pumps back to the tank was pointing across the room so spayed the entire dinner room with water. Great laugh at my expense).

Anyway on to my question;
After I let it run over night to make sure there were no leaks I put in the salt (figured it was better to mix it in an empty tank) and let it run for the night.

I woke up and the water was a bit cloudy but the salinity and test were in range of what was needed and recommend.

I then added a deep sand bed to my refugium/sump and the bottom of the thank which turned the entire tank into a cloudy mess.

I figured all that sand has to settle. So at the recommendation of a friend and after reading a lot of post here on cloudy water I turned everything off.

So everything has been off for two days and the water does seem to be cleaning up as I can see thru the tank and from end to end, however its really cloudy still.

My question is I notice that the sand is very powdery or at the very least the stuff that is still settling is very fine. Do you think this might be undissolved salt mix or just the finer parts of the live sand I put in?

How long do you think it will be before the water is clear and when I turn everything back on will it just stir up everything and make it cloudy again?

Right now there is not in the tank except the sand (no fish or anything).

Thanks in advance for all your help. I guess I am just getting impatient.

Oh and one more thing. I did go to the LFS today and asked them if I should put water clarifier in the tank and they strongly recommended against it so I have no put anything in there. They said just wait.

Kris,

You are just going to have to wait for things to settle out... Running your pumps at this point is fine. Next time, rinsing the sand will likely help. An old school floss or sponge filer will do wonders as well.

I am going to ask a mod to move the thread to the "new to the hobby" forum though, as I think you will get much more help there (this is the DIY forum).

My tank I set up on Satruday did the same thing. I just put some filter floss on the drains and added carbon in my sump to help clear it up. Youre just going to have to wait it out.

And by all means keep the pump on. Otherwise it will all start over as soon as you DO turn it on.

Thanks everyone!!! I will do the floss thing in the morning. I will place it over my overflow and also put my sock on the inflow of the overflow pipe. I think I will also add floss over the return section of my sump/refugium were the refugium empties into it just to be safe and ensure the sand that gets mixed up from the deep sand bed does not get pushed back thur the return. I will keep you posted

Thanks again!!!!
