I set up a new aquarium 3 days ago and my water is still cloudy. I've honestly never had a tank stay this cloudy for this long. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it to clear up quicker? I've considered changing the water but I'm not sure if that will help or just make things worse by stirring things up again.

Yeah, I put some in the bottom, then added the water...then afterwards got the bright idea to add more sand directly into the water and since then it's stayed cloudy. I've tried adding a filter onto the tank to help pull out some of the particles but it doesn't seem to be helping.

It will need 5 days or more to settle out. You will want to check your powerheads to make sure they are not stirring up the sand and contributing to the problem.
Did you rinse your sand??? if not I would run mechanical filtration (socks, other) and change/rinse often.
Give it time.. as often said.... NOTHING GOOD happens FAST in this hobby.

Time and if u can add some socks/floss that would help. A water change wouldnt hurt but prob not necessary. After cloudiness is resolved if your srill cycling remove the socks/floss until cycled.

I did 2 water changes yesterday and it made it worse. This morning it looks a lot clearer but still not 100%. I've found that turning off the skimmer and extra power head seems to have really helped. I guess having all that running was keeping everything stirred up.

Yea but you cant leave it off for good, rhings are just settling. You need to get it out. Filtering and water changing takes it out. If adding the new water made it worse , ie disturbed more sand at the bottom that means theres more settled in there. You can keep trying to filter or you can take.the sand out for a proper cleaning rinse session. With only a few days at it I highly suspect youre tank isn't cycled yet, so no harm in doing the sand clean and major eater change. Gluck

I generally agree with this but not knowing how well the sand was washed, it could be quite a bit longer than normal. But like you said he'll be cycling for a while so even if it takes a few weeks so be it...
