clown and lion?

I have been in this hobby for quite a while, but I just wanted to get another opinion or two. Could a 2.5" percula clown go with a 3" volitan lionfish? I think so, because my lionfish is actually pretty calm. The quarantine that the lionfish is in right now is right next to my main tank, and the clown doesn't seem to be any problem with the lion, he just minds his own business. The tank that I will VERY soon be putting them in is a 180 gallon, and the clownfish will have a carpet anemone to be protected by with 3 other clowns. So, do you think that would be a good idea, or should I keep the lionfish in a separate tank? I would like to keep everything in the same tank, but if I have to, I will house the lionfish in another tank. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure they'd probably be ok together NOW...but when the lion gets older & the clow leaves the anemone to feed it could easly become food. Do you not have any shrimp or other small things in the tank the lion would eat? I dont think I've ever herd of someone putting a lion in a reef tank

Yeah, I've thought about the feeding thing. I will feed the lionfish first, distracting him, and while he's distracted, i'll feed the clowns. It worked when I had a piranha and a gourami together (yeah, I know, "how crazy can you be?"). The piranha didn't seem to bother the gourami at all. Wierd, huh! Anyway, I will try some different things for feeding and eventually find one that works best. BTW, I did see a lionfish in a reef w/ damsels, and they were just fine. this was a 220 gallon, though. Thanks for your response anyway! I will take your advice.

Oh yeah, alomost forgot! The only small things I have in the tank are the clowns and a few 4" shrimp, and he hasn't bothered with those, either.Probably because they are too big! But I will be sure to watch all my small things and inverts with him, too.

Im pretty sure that wasnt a pirhana if it was it would have destroyed your gouramai. It had to of been a Red Belly Pacu.

Most of the aggressive large fish are "coral safe" and thus can go in reefs. The issues are primarily smaller fish and shrimp, or in the case of triggers, crabs and snails, not to mention that they will sometimes redecorate the rockwork.

Like I said, it was REALLY wierd, and yes, I am SURE it was a red bellied piranha, not a pacu. I don't think a pacu would shread goldfish to pieces (lol), they are herbivorous(however you spell that. Anyway, my lfs told me it was a cb piranha, and the store was Preuss Animal House. Their website is www.preusspets.com if you want to check it out for yourselves. I think I had the piranha and the gourami in the tank together for about 6 or 7 months. Oh yeah, djc1026, the rocks will are anchored down, so not to worry about the rocks tipping over.

I wouldnt chance it. lions have eyes and mouths much bigger than their stomachs.I have seen them choke on a fish that is too large for them, the clown will always be a potential food item to the lion. now if you had a fully grown clarkii or maroon it would be a different story.

well, I still might chance it. probably not, but still might. my clownfish is my oldest fish and I don't want to loose any fish. I think it may be ok if I get a carpet anemone for the pair or so. Because think about it: if the clownfish has protection and the lion doesn't touch the anemone, the clowns should be safe. I actually put a lot of thought into what anemone would be best for my tank, both looks and what is safer. Here is what I came up with: a breeded pair of true clowns and a blue carpet anemone. Yes, I do have metal halide lighting and 2 fluorescent tubes ( 20,000K and 100% blue actinic). The clownfish that I have now are still growing and have been for the past year. I got them when they were like 1", so they should be safe with the lion when they are fully grown. thanx for the responses again. If you like, I can post pics of the current quarantine that all the fish are in now( the lion is in a separate tank).

good luck as i had 2 percs around 3" and a lion that wasn't much bigger and he still made a meal of one of the clowns. needless to say the lion had to go.

I was considering puttting my 3 inch oscellaris with a 2 inch Fu Manchu and still haven't decided what to do. So good luck with whatever you do.

I DO VALUE THEM. That's why I was asking everyone what they would do. That's also why I said I would put the lionfish in a separate tank if any harm would be done, if I didn't value them, I would have just been a dumba** and put the lionfish in the tank without caring. Good enough explanation? Yes, I did say that i would like to keep everything together, but I went to like 5 different forums and asked people there what they have done and if it was safe enough to do, and this forum was one of them. Now apparently people like stykthyn can't just give me a flat out answer. The first time you answered was enough, and I thanked you for that, now didn't I? I was just asking a question and you(stykthyn) had to tell me something else. I also said that I probably wouldn't even do it, so don't go saying things, it was just a question. Sorry to everyone else if I offended you, you didn't deserve it.

Relax. Everyone already said it would not be a good idea but then you said you might do it anyway. Most likley your clownfish will get eaten but you are not going to take the advice and might put them together anyway. That is probably why stykthyn made that post. Please for the sake of your clown don't chance it.

ok ok, I won't. Sorry for doing that, but I value my pets the most out of anything else, and stykthyn just ****ed me off. Like I said, thanx for the replies, and I will take everyone's advice, so not to worry. Still keep on adding more comments though! I like to hear from other people, since in my town there is like nobody into saltwater beside my friend.

A personal friend of mine who owns a LFS and has about 8-10 years of experience said that I could keep very small lion with my clowns and that they'd grow up together and the lion would never bother the clowns. As he has a 11 inch Volitan in a 210g with oscellaris and percs. and the lion never bothered them. I was tempted to by an 1 1/2'' fuzzy dwarf this weekend but stopped myself. I still wouldn't risk it but its ultimately your decesion. I'm just a newb who talks to a lot of people that have been in it for a while.

Sweet! Like I keep on saying, I don't know, but if a LFS owner said I could, along with preuss, it is more than likely safe. I will try it for a while, but if the lion shows any aggression towards the clowns, I will immediately take him out and put him in a separate tank.
