clown and lion?

Just a quick FYI... the lion WILL NOT show agression at all...they are amazing and peacefull creatures ... it will just swim up to the clown and WHAM! bye bye clown...swallowed whole! no agression at all. Their mouths can open just as wide as their bodies.

Oh.... and if I had a penny for every time I've herd "well the LFS owner said it would be ok" I'd be rich!!!! 99.9 percent of LFS owners know absolutly nothing about fish... 95% of their workers are just as ...whats the word I'm looking for.... dumb? as the owners.

Back in the 80s I had a large "Sebae" clown (I now suspect it was really a clarkii) in a tank with a panther grouper and a large lion. Never saw any aggression for 8 months then one day I came home.....

The poor clown took a long time to actually be swallowed and nearly choked the lion.

Like I said, I still don't think I'd try it, I was just relaying the facts that were told to me. Volitans can get extremely big. And like JovReefer said, they won't show any agression it will just be swallowed up in an instant. As for now I decided against it until I figure out a solution. I maybe just putting my clowns in a 20g and keeping the fuzzy dwarf in the 37 along with a larger fish. Another thing is that a fuzzy dwarf is much smaller than a volitan and should not exceed 6-7 inches. They also have the smallest mouths out of all the lions from what I've read and still its risky. Like I said before its completely your decision but I would really think about this because you do seem to care for your clowns. Just my 2 cents.

p.s. I didn't mean to bash volitans as they are one of my favorite lions after the radiata, but just had make a point.

I have been in this hobby for quite a while, but I just wanted to get another opinion or two. Could a 2.5" percula clown go with a 3" volitan lionfish? I think so, because my lionfish is actually pretty calm. The quarantine that the lionfish is in right now is right next to my main tank, and the clown doesn't seem to be any problem with the lion, he just minds his own business. The tank that I will VERY soon be putting them in is a 180 gallon, and the clownfish will have a carpet anemone to be protected by with 3 other clowns. So, do you think that would be a good idea, or should I keep the lionfish in a separate tank? I would like to keep everything in the same tank, but if I have to, I will house the lionfish in another tank. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

A really good meal :)

Well, I've decided to go with not putting them together, PERMANENTLY. I've seen what could happen, and I do not want to chance my oldest fish with a lionfish, unless I decide to get like a fuzzy dwarf or a fu manchu. Thanx for the advice, though. BTW, I was only agreeing with the positive feedback because my dad actually wanted to know(let me guess.... excuses excuses) so we could set up another tank if needed. I also only took the positive feedback because I personally thought it was ok, and I like to see people say the same thing that I do(selfish). Therefore, I listened to the majority of responses and took my action. No fish tonight for dinner!!!! Keep replying, though!

Fu Manchu's are awesome lions, my favorite actually...too bad when I wanted to get on they only had a full grown one, I need one thats around 2 inches..but if you can get them to eat frozen food they're a great fish.

if you valued your clownfish, you wouldnt even be considering this

I don't think stykthyn insulted you in any way. He/she told you straight out, if you valued your clownfish you wouldn't even think about it. Very good advice, BTW.

that's different! those are bred to be fed. damsels are bred to be kept! same with all the other small stuff. I don't know, I just love animals.

Nah, never heard of it. Didn't even know it existed. Of course I've heard of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(lol) But that gets to be a wee bit expensive, now doesn't it? But, you did tell us that it is only once in a while.

Good choice by not putting in the clowns. I know from experience that it wont work i had 2 two inch clowns(percs) and a 3-4 inch lion. Everyone told me they would by gone but because i wanted them in there so bad i went against the odds and lost both. My lion actually stalked them at night he would wait for them to come out of hiding, he would stay in 1 spot for like an hour waiting and then one night he got one then the next night the other.
So if you value your clowns i would not do it. Again good choice
