Clown casualty

*sigh* One of my naked clowns with white checks killed himself today. I have a 12g nanocube with a modified rear chambers. Right side is a fuge, middle compartment is filled with bag of carbon and bag of chemipure, last chamber is the return. Somehow the clown ended up in the return and got himself stuck onto the return pump. I have no idea how he managed to get there. I guess he must have somehow squeezed through the teeth of the overflow...I'm amazed he could fit. I guess he managed to swim through all the baffles. I'm very surprised he could find a way to get through around all the bags and rock rubble, etc. I guess he didn't stand much of a chance once he got into the return. The pump has some major suction on it and there is not much swimming room. If he got to close, he wouldn't have been able to escape which is what had to have happened. He was not sick or anything. He was very healthy and doing well. The pump just overwhelmed him. He didn't get sucked into it. He just got sucked onto the outside of the intake for the pump and couldn't get loose. I had to work a double at work so was gone 16hrs. He was fine when I left and dead when I got home. I knew something was up when I didn't see him in the front of the tank. He always came out to greet me when he saw me...expecting to be fed, etc.

Anyhoo, has anyone else has this problem with their nanocubes? I've never had any of the fish make it into the back chambers before. I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening...a mesh or something over the overflow teeth so that nothing can swim through there? If this is an option, what do you suggest I use? Any other suggestions for ways to protect the fish from getting into the return. The return pump has alot of suction and I don't think any smaller fish would be able to escape it. It is my sole source of flow in the tank and it provides me alot if flow...both top and botton of tank (I have to return split to both top and bottom) so I don't need any pumps in the DT. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
